History Of Fleet Landing
In the early 1980’s, a group of retired Naval Officers from the Jacksonville area met with Preston Haskell, President of the Haskell Company which was a large local construction firm. Their discussion was about the possibility of building a retirement community, originally aimed at the “retired military officer community” in Northeast Florida .
In 1985 the “Naval Continuing Care Retirement Foundation” was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization and efforts proceeded towards the purchase of land, funding, and determining level of interest.
Originally land on the south side ( Orange Park area) of Jacksonville was the prime area of consideration, but under the leadership of Captain Ike Simonson and other early Board members, several parcels totaling some 74 acres was found in Atlantic Beach .
The original project cost about $62 million, with construction commencing in 1987, and first move-ins in 1989. Fleet Landing later purchased an additional 4 acre site that Leeward Manor was built on and later a 13 acre site which is planned to become “The Palms at Fleet Landing”.
Hundreds of families moved in between 1989 and 1991 and at our peak we had just over 500 Residents living in the independent community. While now open to the general public, many Residents have long histories of public service, either in the military or government service.
Long range financial planning and a keen interest in strategic planning ensure the long term health of the community, and Atlantic Beach itself has grown to be the community of choice for many.
