Marek M. Pienkowski, M.D., Ph.D., received international attention in 1984 when he used plasma from a hyper-immunized honeybee keeper to protect a patient who was severely allergic to honeybee stings.
For several months, another allergist had given this patient standard therapies, which, unfortunately, were associated with severe anaphylactic reactions. To help the patient, Dr. Pienkowski transfused him with eight units of plasma from a hyper-immunized honey-bee keeper to provide transient protection, followed by effective immunization procedures. Since that time, the man has been stung on several occasions with no reactions.
As a result, the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has referred several patients from across the country to Dr. Pienkowski for hyper-immune plasma transfusions after failing standard allergy therapies. The plasma Dr. Pienkowski used contained anti-IgE antibodies, which are currently being investigated by Genetech as a therapeutic treatment for patients with allergic asthma.
