Nathan Littauer Hospital and Nursing Home is located on a 34-acre campus on the northern edge of the city of Gloversville in Fulton County. The campus houses a four-level, 74-bed acute care Hospital; a one-story, 84-bed residential Nursing Home; a two-level Medical Arts Building, plus additional structures.

As the only hospital in Fulton County, Nathan Littauer Hospital is a unique and essential health care resource that has served the community since 1894. With its 24-hour Emergency Department, Nathan Littauer serves as a vital entry point for a majority of the area's emergency cases.

As part of its Mission, Nathan Littauer has developed a comprehensive "Family of Health Care Services," in addition to traditional acute care inpatient and outpatient services, that reach out to meet a variety of community needs. A complete list of our services is listed in the section called Inpatient/Outpatient Services.

The History of the Nathan Littauer Hospital Complex

On May 21, 1891, the Gloversville Hospital Association was formed to establish a Hospital in the City of Gloversville. Later that year a local businessman, Lucius N. Littauer, offered $25,000 to build a Hospital in memory of his father, Nathan Littauer. His contribution, made in the name of his mother, brothers and himself, led to a change in the name of the Association in 1892 to the Nathan Littauer Hospital Association. Mr. Littauer's act of generosity stirred the citizens of the community to contribute another $10,000, and on May 30, 1894, the first Nathan Littauer Hospital was opened on Littauer Place in Gloversville. A School of Nursing was established soon after the Hospital was opened.

On May 17, 1968, our current Hospital building was dedicated. It began serving patients on the current site during September. The School of Nursing was discontinued when the new Hospital opened. The education of nurses was assumed by Fulton-Montgomery Community College in affiliation with the Hospital.

The Hospital facility has undergone several renovations since its opening. A new addition constructed in 1984 houses a modern Emergency Department, Respiratory Care and EKG services, Rehabilitative Medicine and the Special Care Unit. Several years later, a new section housing the Hospital's CAT scanner was added.

The Nursing Facility located on Easterly Street adjacent to the Hospital, opened its doors to residents of Fulton County and surrounding areas on April 4, 1972.

On July 1, 1972, the Medical Arts Building, which provides office space for area physicians in private practice, was opened. The addition of the Medical Arts Building brought practicing physicians on our staff closer to the Hospital for the convenience of both the physicians and their patients.

In 1989, the Hospital launched HealthLink, its wellness education and resource program. Initially located in downtown Johnstown, HealthLink is now situated in the Johnstown Mall. Its location offers easy, convenient access to residents of the community. Since its inception, HealthLink has provided programming and information to more than 62,000 people.

The Hospital officially assumed operational responsibility for the Nursing Home on January 4, 1991. This consolidation expanded the formal array of services offered by the Hospital entity and provided a wider range of career opportunities for employees.

In 2000, we opened a 16,000 square foot Surgical Center and a 10,000 square foot Primary/Specialty Care Center in Gloversville.

The Hospital continued to expanded its Primary/Specialty Care Center network throughout Fulton and Hamilton counties by opening a center in Johnstown, followed by centers in Mayfield, Speculator, Caroga Lake, a second Gloversville location, and in Perth-Broadalbin. These centers provide comprehensive medical care with quick access to the technology and expertise offered by the Hospital.
