When Mark and Hale Walker founded First Preferred Mortgage Company in 1992, their business philosophy revolved around commitment, consistency and community. Nearly two decades later, First Preferred Mortgage Company has not only become a Port Huron, Mich. institution, but has expanded to become one of the most trusted and respected mortgage banks in Michigan and the Midwest.

From our modest beginnings as a mortgage broker in the “attic” of the old JC Penney’s building in downtown Port Huron, we have steadily grown and expanded our scope of services for our clients. To a large extent, that success can be attributed to our consistent willingness to invest in the processes and outstanding people that have helped elevate a small mortgage broker into a diverse and dynamic mortgage banking resource.

The growth and evolution of First Preferred Mortgage Company has been a steady process. We expanded our services to include construction lending in 1994 and formally entered into the mortgage wholesale business in 2003, with the opening of a wholesale division: Michigan Mutual, Inc. (MMI). MMI purchases mortgages from mortgage brokers and small banks in Michigan and 19 additional states, which provides an additional depth of resources and flexibility to First Preferred’s retail operations.

Similar to our expanded loan offerings, our management team has evolved and grown. Shortly after founding the firm, Mark and Hale Walker hired an experienced sales professional, Mike Cansfield. Along with these gentlemen, Sharon Smith joined the firm in 2006 and Vince Parlove, who joined in 2008, comprise the First Preferred Mortgage Company Board Members. James V. McTevia has served as an advisor to the Board of Directors since 1994. As a result, First Preferred Mortgage Company is led by a well-rounded professional team that includes experts in mortgage origination, real estate, construction and customer service.
