Tailor every resume.

Take the time to make sure your resume matches some key words and skills from each job description. Same with your cover letter! The days of sending duplicate resumes are over.

Network as much as possible.

Hiring professionals agree that this is one of the most effective job-search methods. Also having a personal connection can sometimes be the factor that makes you stand out from a sea of anonymous resumes. Stay in touch with associates, former colleagues, but also be open to seizing any public interaction (e.g., neighbor at the grocery store) as a networking opportunity. You never know who'll you meet or what connection you might make if you don't try.

Cast a wide net.

Follow up.

It's important to follow up with an employer to make sure you don't get lost in the shuffle -- especially if it's a job you really want. Wait five business days, at least.
