5 Key Tips for Landing a New Job Today
While some economists believe economic conditions are improving in 2010, the job market remains intensely competitive due to a high unemployment rate. Use the tips below to help you stay ahead of the pack during your job hunt.
Tailor every resume.
Take the time to make sure your resume matches some key words and skills from each job description. Same with your cover letter! The days of sending duplicate resumes are over.
Network as much as possible.
Hiring professionals agree that this is one of the most effective job-search methods. Also having a personal connection can sometimes be the factor that makes you stand out from a sea of anonymous resumes. Stay in touch with associates, former colleagues, but also be open to seizing any public interaction (e.g., neighbor at the grocery store) as a networking opportunity. You never know who'll you meet or what connection you might make if you don't try.
Cast a wide net.
In addition to using Yahoo! HotJobs, research company sites and industry-specific sites; also check trade publications and alumni career resources, if available.
Follow up.
It's important to follow up with an employer to make sure you don't get lost in the shuffle -- especially if it's a job you really want. Wait five business days, at least. Try to contact a specific person, recruiter, or hiring manager. Whether you communicate via email or phone, be polite and positive.
Treat your job search like a marathon, not a sprint.
Finding a job can take months, and you need to be prepared to be persistent and positive. Commit to action daily, but also make sure you take breaks to recharge your batteries. You'll need endurance, but it's critical that you also keep a genuinely positive attitude.
