Position Title: Vice President, Research and Development
Description: The Vice President of Research and Development will lead and develop a World Class team of approximately 40 engineers and scientists that conceives, prototypes, demonstrates clinical feasibility, designs, and delivers new relevant technologies to the aesthetics market place. This successful market-focused leader is a Corporate Officer and a member of the Leadership Team. The VP is a strategic thinker who will be a strong manager of people and projects, achieving results through inspired leadership and accountability. This position will proactively develop collaborative relationships with all functional partners including Marketing, Sales, Operations, Quality and G&A. While working cross-functionally, the incumbent will ensure that timeline, quality, and budget targets are met and will deliver R&D objectives and goals. He or she will implement change and will oversee the research, clinical feasibility, design, development, and manufacturability of Solta’s proprietary products.

Principle Responsibilities and Duties:

Advanced Development
• Collaborate with the Advanced Development teams and Marketing in anticipating changes and needs in the aesthetics market place.
• Drive initiatives related to future potential and capabilities.
• Provide leadership in the areas of conceiving, prototyping and demonstrating clinical feasibility.
• Work with Advanced Development and Marketing in relation to relevant clinical applications. Evaluate new and competitive technologies and their potential value in the market place.
• Collaborate with key functional leaders in evaluating innovations that have a benefit to patients in the areas of body contouring, skin tightening, skin resurfacing and other dermatological and plastic surgical treatments.
Product Development
• Collaborate with the VP of Marketing to drive long and short-term product development needs.
• Design and develop quality products, meeting target COGS objectives that can be manufactured with effective time-to-market deadlines within budget.
• Support the product development team with state-of-the-art laboratory methods, research tools and analytical/modeling techniques to understand and guide the performance characteristics and clinical relevance of products under development.
• Manage projects and programs to insure adherence to project schedules and operating budget.
• Implement tactical direction for the development of all products.
• Ensure that all product development is conducted in accordance with design control procedures.
Other Responsibilities and Duties:
• Manage the intellectual property portfolio including being the primary interface with corporate patent counsel.
• Up to 25% international and U.S. travel.
Experience, Education, Training, Traits:
• This position requires a minimum of a Master’s degree in a relevant field of hard science and a strong working knowledge of clinical, medical and biomedical science applicable to Solta’s fields of endeavor. A Ph.D. is highly desirable.
• Previous acquisition and integration experience with new technologies is highly desirable.
• Senior executive experience, proven organizational leadership ability and accountability for overseeing and managing a team, working cross-functionally, and delivering projects on schedule and within budget.
• Experience in the definition or execution of clinical trials supporting product development or launch.
• Strong collaboration, mentoring, team building, and development skills.
• Medical device industry experience (5 years or more) with direct management responsibility for the R&D functions. Engineering management experience for at least 10 years.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in developing state-of-the-art products involving complex software, electronic, mechanical and therapeutic energy delivery systems.
• Knowledge of various energy modalities including radio frequency, ultrasound and laser-based technologies.
• Experience with advanced modeling programs such as Matlab, Comsol and Zemax highly desirable .
• Knowledge of product development tools and procedures.
• Knowledge of a wide variety of fabrication technologies, including prototyping and production for revenue.
• Knowledge of FDA and ISO regulations for design control and manufacture of medical devices.
• Extensive knowledge and experience with project management.
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering specifications, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, specifications, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to perform lifting tasks of up to 85 pounds for short durations. Duties of this job may involve standing and/or walking for extended periods of time. Duties also involve daily keyboard data entry. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
Work Environment
Most work will be performed in an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
