Job Description

As an Army National Guard Heavy Construction Equipment Operator, you’ll be trained to expertly handle crawler and wheeled tractors with dozer attachments, scoop loader, motorized grader, and towed or self-propelled scrapers. You will then be called on to assist in the construction of major projects, such as airfields, roads, dams, and buildings so the Army National Guard can carry out its dual national and state missions.

Heavy Construction Equipment Operators use their knowledge and skills to fulfill several vital needs, including the safe and effective cutting and leveling of earth for runways and roadbeds; correctly interpreting grade stakes information; transporting heavy equipment on a tractor trailer; lifting and moving building materials with winches, cranes, and hoists; and assisting on combat engineer missions.

These are skills that are in demand by building contractors, state highway agencies, rock quarries, well drilling interests, and construction firms. By joining the Army National Guard as a Heavy Construction Equipment Operator, you will be preparing yourself for a rewarding civilian career.

Earn while you learn
Get paid to learn! As an Army National Guard Heavy Construction Equipment Operator, you will learn valuable job skills while earning a regular paycheck and qualifying for tuition assistance.

After nine weeks of Basic Training, where you will learn fundamental Soldiering skills, you will attend 4-12 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), which will include a combination of hands-on and classroom training where you will learn how to operate different pieces of construction equipment as well as their maintenance and repair.

You may also qualify for a number of formal three-year operating engineer apprenticeship programs which are administered by the International Union of Operating Engineers and the Associated General Contractors of America, Inc.
