VP of Engineering for a rapidly growing engineering and manufacturing company in Southern CA

The Company:
Our client is a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of HF/VHF voice and data radio communications systems and products sold to leading government, military and industrial organizations in over 100 countries worldwide. In business for over 30 years, this company offers a comprehensive selection of HF and VHF products that satisfy military and professional voice and data requirements, and a complete line of APCO Project 25 compliant VHF radios designed for users in the Public Safety markets.

This privately held, $100 million firm has experienced exponential sales and personnel growth over the past five years, due in large measure to the Company's core values and operating philosophies towards its customers and its employees. This rapid growth has generated the requirement for a Vice President of Engineering who can provide the leadership, organizational structure, technical vision, and product development methodologies required to manage the challenges associated with this growth today and in the future.

The Position:
The Vice President of Engineering will report to the CEO and manage the day-to-day operation of a 70-80 person engineering division that provides design engineering, product development, quality enhancement and cost reduction services for this firm’s customers and product families. One of this individual’s key internal responsibilities will be to effectively apply the company’s principles of Servant Leadership in a way that motivates, trains, and engages others to encourage creativity, commitment and cohesiveness, and that builds rapport with individuals and groups, and empowers team members.

This individual will upgrade current engineering practices to foster a more disciplined, structured, cost effective approach to the product development process, and to ensure that the engineering department has the tools and skills necessary to enhance profitability, protect margins and maintain a competitive position in the marketplace. The incumbent will establish a design engineering culture focused on the timely development of competitive products that meet or exceed the customer’s requirements for technical performance and cost, and will implement standards and procedures for the rapid prototyping of initial designs that employ off-the-shelf components whenever practical. While the job requires strong initiative and self-direction, the company believes that sustained positive results can only be achieved with and through others. The incumbent must have a sincere appreciation for the company’s Employees and how they are each uniquely motivated. The company believes that such an appreciation is the foundation for designing and implementing interactive communication and decision-making processes that bear fruit on an ongoing basis.

Externally, this individual will cultivate new product opportunities by meeting with customers, conducting competitive analysis in targeted markets, and by working with the Business Development team to proactively approach new and existing customers with proposals for enhanced products, features, quality improvements, and cost reductions.

The Candidate:
The ideal candidate will be results oriented, customer focused leader who possesses a history of success developing communication products and systems that meet stringent cost, technical performance, and quality targets specified by customers.

He/she must be a seasoned technical and administrative leader with a background that combines structured management of the product development process with results oriented administrative structures that ensure achievement of organizational objectives. An in-depth understanding of the product development cycle, coupled with a sense of competitive drive and the ability to stay focused on results despite changing conditions, is the key to achieving the performance objectives of this position. The candidate must be focused on meeting the needs of both customers and those they lead, and must be able to develop employees to bring out the best in them.

Such experience will have been gained in a commercial environment developing communications products optimized for customer applications, and will have endowed the candidate with the enthusiasm and experience required to build rapport and cooperation within engineering groups, to motivate, train, engage and serve staff members, and to encourage creativity, commitment and cohesiveness throughout the organization.

This individual must possess the ability to articulate and implement a medium to long-range vision for the way the engineering organization is to evolve, strong communication skills, and the ability to successfully interact with peers, subordinates and senior management on an ongoing basis. He or she must possess excellent communications and interpersonal skills, the ability to deal effectively with customer representatives at all levels, and the ability to identify, propose, and win profitable new business opportunities across strategically targeted market segments.

Education and Experience:
The preferred candidate will possess an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline, and will have at least 10 years experience managing medium to large engineering organizations. Experience with military communication systems and operations is considered a plus.

Compensation and Opportunity:
This position offers the opportunity to function as a key player within a rapidly growing company developing communications products that will solve problems for customers today and that can set the standard for a new generation of communications platforms in the future.

A competitive compensation package designed to attract the highest caliber talent will be available for this position.
