POSITION PURPOSE:

Under the general direction of the Supervisor and Manager the Surgical Services Registered Nurse this position is responsible for assessing, planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating daily peri-operative patient care to provide optimal patient care utilizing knowledge and skills within the context of evidence based nursing practice and the theory of human caring and to provide quality service to the surgeons, and anesthesiologists. This Registered Nurse is accountable for individualized patient care and outcomes over an entire episode of care. This Registered Nurse maintains active communication among medical staff, self, and peers and participates in marketing of Surgical Services to the medical staff.


Nature and Scope:

The Registered Nurse must provide optimal patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients and families.

The Registered Nurse must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensor, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to the age of the patient served and meets standards of quality as measured by the unit/department age specific competency standards.

When possible, the family or those significant to the family are considered as part of the assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation efforts of the Registered Nurse. The Registered Nurse coordinates care between other professionals.

Evidence based nursing practice, along with critical thinking skills are required to provide optimally safe patient care when interacting with internal and external contacts and exercising judgment and making decisions. Professional nursing practice is congruent with the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.

It is common to encounter potential hazards in the healthcare environment. Some of these hazards could include, but are not limited to: radiation, toxic chemicals, biological hazards, heat, noise, dust and stress. Washoe Health System has a Safety Management Program in place that addresses these issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program, either with an Associates' Degree, Diploma or a Bachelor's Degree in nursing. Requires the ability to read, write and speak English.

New graduates must have completed the WHS new graduate orientation.

PACU RN's must be ACLS and PALS certified within one year of hire.

License(s)/ Requires a current Nevada State RN license.

Certification(s): Current BLS certification by the American Heart Association standards required.
