Job Responsibilities
  • Direct the activities of a group of 3-4 employees. Responsible for all tax-related matters for the Source Gas LLC businesses. Position will be required to manage staff towards the goal of successfully meeting all Company tax calculation, negotiation, filing and reporting requirements.
  • Manage and review the federal and state tax return preparation, tax accruals, tax budgets, tax research and planning requirements of Source Gas LLC and its operating subsidiaries; state and federal tax preparation management duties will include partnership, corporate and foreign taxable entities
  • Implement controls and meet multi-state tax filing requirements for property, sales, use and any other applicable taxes
  • Minimize taxes to the maximum extent possible under federal state and local laws, rulings and practices
  • Direct and supervise the negotiations of property tax assessments in multiple states, potentially using contract staff
  • Negotiate and settle tax audits and lead the preparation of any necessary tax appeal filings
  • Coordinate with the Company Controller to manage the monthly closing processes applicable to income taxes and taxes other than income taxes, including assurance that proper accounting entries are made
  • Monitor, coordinate and approve all tax payments or disbursements made on behalf of the Company and its subsidiaries
  • Review payroll tax accruals and payments made by the company and work with HR/Payroll Department to assure accuracy of accruals and payments; assist in the process and review the preparation of necessary payroll tax reports necessary under applicable requirements
  • Provide analytical support on rate and tariff-related matters for the regulated natural gas distribution business
  • Monitor and help ensure that Regulatory Affairs makes all required filings in all relevant jurisdictions
  • Maintain Regulatory Affairs’ electronic and original tariff books
  • Oversight and maintenance of Regulatory Affairs on-site filing library and off-site inventory of documents
  • Provide regulatory support to the distribution business unit leaders related to day-to-day operations
  • Gather and compile the necessary information, analyses, and exhibits to complete timely filings with regulatory agencies
  • Help perform the compilation of cost-revenue studies and financial analyses related to the earnings of the regulated distribution business and for internal financial reporting
  • Keep abreast of, interpret, and communicate applicable regulatory agency regulations and statutes with internal departments and help ensure compliance with those policies
  • Provide analytical and regulatory support to teams studying potential acquisitions
  • Help monitor, analyze and make recommendations regarding the need to intervene in upstream service provider and rulemaking dockets, and the need to file or revise Company services and tariffs when considering the company's business strategy and regulatory and statute compliance requirements
  • Write effectively and understand written communications
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship between with internal and external customers, and departments supported
  • Deal with a wide variety of people with tact, courtesy and professionalism
  • Speak clearly, both in person and by telephone, using high level verbal skills, and listen carefully

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Finance required; preferably with Tax concentration
  • CPA required
  • MBA or MS in Tax a plus

Job Requirements

  • ERP system familiarity strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 7-10 years direct work experience in tax preparation and supervision of tax staff
  • Big 4 Accounting firm tax and or audit experience
  • Experience and skill interpreting and applying knowledge of federal and state tax laws, regulations and other relevant authorities to perform tax responsibilities
  • Experience with tax accounting functions, including but not limited to specific knowledge of FAS 71, FAS 109 and FAS 133, tax return true ups, financial footnote disclosures, effective tax rate calculations, and supervising and preparing detailed tax expense and balance sheet account reconciliations, to ensure compliance with GAAP
  • Experience with regulated utility/natural gas utility accounting policies, practices and procedures
  • Experience controlling and supervising the monthly and year-end closing processes applicable to income tax and other taxes
  • Ability to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization and supervise staff
  • Must be able to work with confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner
  • Able to work with a team, take direction from CFO, focus attention on details, follow work rules, and adhere to work schedules
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal direct supervision
  • Capable of completing and tracking multiple tasks simultaneously and often under strict deadlines
  • Proven organizational and time management skills required
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in computer skills (PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Specific experience with tax software functionality and software implementation and design is a requirement
