Middleware Engineer - 3rd Shift

Responsible for supporting third-party middleware software products, such as IBM MQ Series and IBM WebSphere Application Server. Primary responsibilities include installing, maintaining, configuring, tuning, monitoring, and trouble-shooting middleware products that are on our support list. Responsibilities also include providing consulting to groups implementing middleware technologies. The role includes working with development groups and support groups.
Work Hours: 3rd Shift, to include weekend hours.
MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
Technology (60%)
- Establish and develop a working knowledge of supporting middleware products such as WebSphere MQ, WebSphere application Server, etc. This includes performing installs, upgrades, configuration, tuning, clustering and troubleshooting.
- Provide developers technical assistance with application integration, debugging and performance tuning in regards to the middleware technologies being used.
- Solve technical problems independently.
- Establish and develop a working knowledge on the following operating systems: Linux, Windows, AIX, Solaris, and z/OS.
- Provide 24x7 production middleware support.
- Provide well written documentation and presentations on middleware technologies supported by the group.
- Work with different software vendors to determine solutions.
- Work various teams to proactively address support issues.
- Work effectively independently and in a team environment.
- Work as the primary contact for some projects.
- Communicates project strategy and delivers regular status updates to project team and management.
- Follow up on outstanding issues with project team and management.
- Provide guidance to less-experienced staff members while continuing to utilize other staff for technical assistance.
- Communicate in a professional manner in person and in email when interacting with team members and customers.
- Manage individual career development; initiate career development discussions with team lead/manager.
- Estimate personal efforts required to complete task-related activities.
- Manage multiple and sometimes competing priorities.
- Produce and maintain detailed technical documentation for all assigned tasks and projects, for example, support procedures.
- Ensure that company change and problem methodologies are followed.
- Submit weekly time accounting time sheets and project status reports as appropriate.
- Understand West and Thomson's product lines, and TLR supported technologies.
- Understand internal business processes and how they affect the Corporation, for example, the budget process.
- Translate business requirements into technical solutions that the group can provide.
- Represent the group externally at a technical level as required.
- BA, BS or AA or equivalent industry work experience.
- Minimum of 2 years experience with application servers or/and WebSphere MQ.
- Working knowledge in one of the following operating systems: Linux, Solaris, AIX, Windows and/or z/OS.
- Must be able to work 3rd shift hours.
- Proven analytical and trouble shooting skills.
- Ability to set scope and deliver quality results.
- Ability to work with little direction/independently.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in utilizing change management systems and maintenance windows in support of achieving highly available enterprise systems.
- Basic shell scripting experience.
