Independently conducts development work as part of a major research and/or development project. Receives minimal technical direction/review on broad scope or complex projects. Viewed as an expert in one or more in-house technologies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Drives complex or novel assignment requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. Work is expected to result in the development of new or refined technologies, products, materials, processes, equipment, and/or scientific method to broaden BSC’s Intellectual Property in key strategic areas.
2. Successfully completes engineering work in one or more of the following: technology development, product design and development, test of materials, preparation of specifications, process study, research investigation (animal and clinical studies), and report preparation.
3. Provides guidance to product and technology teams.
4. Assesses the feasibility and soundness of alternative engineering processes, products, or equipment.
5. Coordinates, manages, and documents project goals and progress and recommends appropriate revisions.
6. Interfaces with Physicians/Cath Lab personnel to identify needs and to obtain feedback on concepts and performance of new devices and to translate customer needs into product concepts.
7. Develops and coaches others on engineering documentation.
8. Trains and/or provides work direction to technicians and less experienced engineers.
9. Leads engineering teams to the successful completion of project goals.
10. Demonstrates PDP/TPD system knowledge through coaching and delivery of high quality, high impact deliverables.
QUALIFICATIONS
Typical minimum education/years experience:
BS in Engineering/Technical Field; 8+ years experience (7+ years with MS).
Other Key Competencies:
• Ability to recommend as well as read and interpret analytical methods used for characterizing polymeric materials to include:
o FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy)
o GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography)
o DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry)
o DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis)
o TMA (Thermal Mechanical Analysis)
o TGA (Thermal Gravimetric Analysis)
• Knowledge of a wide range of polymeric materials (thermoplastics and thermosets to include adhesives)
o Knowledge and/or ability to determine how materials will or may respond to intended process and use environments to include primary processes (extrusion, injection molding, compression/transfer molding and coating processes), secondary processes (thermal shaping, bonding/joining etc.), sterilization and end use.
o Recommend polymeric materials for products in development or for selection to replace existing materials.
• Work with internal and external vendors to recommend and trouble shoot processes:
o Extrusion
o Injection Molding
o Dipping/Casting
o Joining
· Plastic on plastic: Thermal, Vibration, Ultrasonic, etc.
· Surface Pre-Treating (plasma, mechanical, chemical)
· Adhesives: (UV, thermal setting, moisture curing, etc.)
