The System Administrator’s role is to operate and tune Unix/Linux systems, servers, and related components to ensure high levels of availability and security of the supported business applications. This individual also participates in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure Unix/Linux system provisioning and maintenance that is consistent with company goals, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:


Strategy & Planning
•Participate in and support capacity planning and the development of long-term strategic goals for Unix/Linux systems and software in conjunction with end-users and department managers.
Acquisition & Deployment
•Collect requirements from appropriate business representatives to implement Unix/Linux systems that utilize industry best practices to meet corporate objectives.
•Install, configure, and maintain Unix/Linux systems and software.
•Install, configure, and maintain SAN/Storage infrastructure
Operational Management
•Implement policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure Unix/Linux system security through secure system access, monitoring, control, and routine security evaluations.
•Perform standard configuration, management, and maintenance tasks for related file systems, input/output systems, networking, clustering, storage, and applications.
•Perform and test system configuration backups and restores to ensure system recovery from error or outage.
•Perform and test data backups and restores, in conjunction with the storage team where present, to ensure full data retrieval.
•Review and deploy Unix/Linux system releases and vendor-supplied patches according to best practices.
•Anticipate, mitigate, identify, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware and software problems on all Unix/Linux systems.
•Support application development teams throughout project lifecycles.
•Monitor, test, and tune system performance; preserve and provide system log files as needed.
•Recommend and execute modifications to Unix/Linux systems in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.
•Conduct research on Unix/Linux-related hardware and software in support of procurement and system development efforts.
•Remain informed on laws, trends, and issues, including current and emerging technologies and best practices; advise, counsel, and educate executive and management teams on their relative importance.
•Ensure Unix/Linux-based systems comply with policies, standards, licensing agreements, configuration guidelines, and best-practices for maintaining regulatory compliance.
•Ensure secure user access and role validation processes.
•Perform Unix/Linux server/database transaction and security audits leading to identification and mitigation of security threats to enterprise data. Recommend and implement changes where necessary.
•Create required reports in response to business user needs.
•Create shell scripts.
•Develop, document, and maintain Unix/Linux system training materials and systems documentation for educating end users and new IT staff.
•Mentor and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team.


QUALIFICATIONS:


•Specific knowledge of HPUX, Linux, VmWare, and heterogeneous
SAN environment required
•Specific knowledge of EMC Clariion, Hitachi, Brocade Fabrics, STK L/SL series robots, Veritas NetBackup and Legato Networker required.
•Past experience working with GFS, Oracle (on Unix/Linux), SAP, OS Clustering (HP ServiceGuard, and Cluster Suite), is desirable
•Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining Unix/Linux servers, networks, and clusters.
•Hands-on hardware and software troubleshooting experience.
•Working technical knowledge of coding using Perl, CGI, C, and shell scripting.
•Good technical knowledge of current network hardware and standards.
•Strong understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
•Strong customer service orientation.
•Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
•Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
•Good written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
•Ability to conduct research into Unix/Linux issues and products as required.
•Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language.
•Highly self motivated and directed.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE


•College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science or 10 years equivalent work experience.
•Certification in ITIL preferred
•Experience working in validated environments desirable
