Back-end Systems Engineer/Architect

San Mateo, CA (If the location is an issue, they can allow flexible work hours and some telecommuting.)

Up to Roughly $150k Depending on Experience, Heavy Equity.

This company is a top-tier VC funded startup focused on re-inventing the "What to Buy" space; solving the challenging problem of doing fast, effective product research. Some industry analysts have called us the "Consumer Reports of the Future" but our mission is to become the trusted source for all product recommendations. Our team consists of a number of tenured industry veterans with deep experience in startups and well known companies such as PeopleSoft, E-Trade, NetSuite, and Procter & Gamble.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement significant components of the back-end systems including:
  • Search engine
  • Text-analysis systems
• Troubleshoot/scale/optimize back-end systems

Qualifications

• 5+ years of engineering experience with Python/Ruby/Java/C#/C++/PHP or other OO languages
• Extensive data structure and algorithm design skills
• Deep knowledge of database systems (custom and generic RDBMS)
• Successful prior delivery of robust publicly accessible systems

Preferred Experience

• Highly scalable systems (such as web search engines)
• Agile development and unit-tested systems
• Machine learning and natural language processing
• Large-scale Python systems development
• Contributions to open source projects
• Experience working with machine learning/data mining, statistical analysis, Smalltalk, LISP/Scheme, scripting languages, Matlab or SAS/STAT
