Minimum Experience/Education: A Ph.D. in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, or physical science
At least 5 peer reviewed publications and participation in a National and International assessment (e.g., Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Climate Change Science Program assessments). 3 to 6 years experience in working in situ and remotely sensed climate data. Departmental Required Skills: Computer literacy (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), solid written and oral communication skills, and strong background in statistics and data analysis are essential. An ability to work both independently (have primary responsibility for a study) and as a contributing member of a group (provide support for other ongoing studies) is necessary. Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Skill in meteorological data analysis, e.g., upper air, surface, satellite data, etc. Skill in writing and modifying computer programs in Fortran, C++, and script languages. Knowledge of using computers, including Linux workstation, MAC or PC. Ability to work in the Unix, Windows, and Linux operating systems. Desire to learn about specific objectives in support of particular data quality issues and climate analysis. Skill in written and oral communications Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and working as a team member. Knowledge of the internal organizational structure of the National Climatic Data Center. Willingness and ability to travel Essential Job Duties: Developing high quality baseline climate data sets from in situ and remotely sensed climate data and participate in the development of blended in situ/satellite data sets for use in climate monitoring and research, Developing scientifically-based quality control algorithms for in situ and remotely sensed climate data of various time scales (hourly, daily, monthly, annually), Developing methods to detect and adjust for inhomogeneities due to issues like instrument changes, or observing station moves and scientific analyses of structural uncertainty due to these methods, Performing research documenting climate variability and change using the observed record and climate model simulations, Facilitating research to operation transitions between data set development activities and the operational use of these data sets in activities such as climate monitoring and climate research at the NCDC.
