Over the past several years, Novartis has had the greatest number of new molecular entities approved by the FDA for clinical use in the US. Novartis is expanding its biologics capabilities to leverage its deep disease area expertise and innovative internal research, as well as to develop discoveries made at leading academic institutions and biotechnology companies. The Novartis Biologics Unit (NBx) is a dedicated biologics discovery and development organization created to accelerate the advancement of Novartis’ rich and rapidly expanding biologics pipeline.
The Process Sciences and Production (PSP) team of the Novartis Biologics (NBx) Unit in Cambridge, MA is seeking a highly-motivated and experienced Scientist to help establish our Mammalian Cell Line Development efforts.
The Scientist will report to the Lab Head of Mammalian Cell Line Development. The team will focus on the production of various therapeutic proteins using proprietary Novartis tools, such as expression vectors, mammalian host cell lines and serum free defined media.
Significant experience with mammalian cell tansfection and high throughput selection methods to identify and isolate cell clones expressing highest quantity and quality therapeutic proteins is required. The cell line generation and therapeutic protein production efforts of our Mammalian Cell Line Development team will be fully supported by our molecular biology, protein purification and analytical sciences colleagues in a highly matrixed, cross-functional, cooperative and entrepreneurial PSP NBx Unit environment.
Following their selection of engineered cell pools or clones expressing the highest levels of therapeutic protein, the Mammalian Cell Line team will design and perform cell culture scale-up for protein production using WAVE bag and stirred tank bioreactor technology platforms. Cell culture activities for therapeutic protein production will typically be performed in 25-100 liter range. The main focus will be on pre-clinical development of NBx projects, but an appreciation of cGMP principles and requirements is important for subsequent development activities.
A B.S. or M.S. degree in biology, cell biology, immunology, or related life science field and 3 plus years of experience in biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry are required.
Recent Ph.D. graduates will also be considered.
The Scientist must be able to work independently to design experiments and perform therapeutic protein expression and production runs to accomplish team goals. Candidate should bring a highly collaborative spirit with an ability to work on multiple projects and maintain well organized records and notebooks.
The successful candidate should also have excellent written and oral communication skills, and be able to thrive in our fast-paced and dynamic organization.
