Intern - Nurseries & OrchardsDescription Southern Timberlands Nurseries & Orchards Internship 2010 Internships will be available at various sites. We have four nursery and six seed orchard operations within the southeastern states of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, and South Carolina Engineering Intern Work as part of a technology team developing safety, process and equipment improvements. Nursery Intern Work as a part of a nursery team developing growing prescriptions and crop plans, tracking crop development, troubleshooting crop issues; administering site safety program. May take part in field work, including sowing, cultural treatments, inventory, lifting and packing. Orchard Intern Work as part of an orchard facility team developing production plans, planning and carrying out crop culture and protection treatments, doing crop inventories, troubleshooting crop issues, supervising hourly and contract crews; administering site safety programs. May take part in field work including crop induction, breeding, fertilization, insect protection, cone inventory and cone harvest. Majors recruited Agricultural/Biological systems engineering Forestry (with forest nursery emphasis) Crop Science Horticulture Plant Biology Soil Science
Qualifications Summer internships typically run from late spring to early fall however, timing can flexible depending on circumstances. To qualify, you must be enrolled in related studies listed below, have completed your freshman year by the start of the internship, and demonstrate strong academic achievement. You must have a valid driver's license, be able to use computers and software, and pass the drug test required of all Weyerhaeuser employees. In addition, you must be willing to work in the woods, nursery, and/or orchard, as well as accept an assignment in a rural area. Engineering Intern Requirements Degree in agriculture engineering or related discipline, experience with agriculture or farming operations and related equipment. High level of knowledge of mechanics, fabrication, hydraulics and irrigation. Ability to relate engineering concepts to people with various technical backgrounds. Nursery Intern Requirements College level coursework in horticulture, plant biology, nursery culture, soil science, nutrition, statistics. Orchard Intern Requirements College level coursework in horticulture, plant biology, nursery culture, soil science, nutrition, statistics.
