Counsel, Medical Staff: Sutter Health
Sutter Health Support Services (SHSS) is the Support Center for the Sutter Health affiliates, which houses all non-medical support departments that are not provided at the affiliates. It provides expertise and guidance to support affiliate functional departments.
The Counsel position assists the Senior Vice President & General Counsel, other more senior attorneys, and members of Sutter Health / Affiliate management by providing legal advice and counsel on a range of topics within their general practice area. This includes: performing legal research, identifying new or emerging areas of risk, and managing or providing support on specific legal projects. The Counsel role is responsible for developing new policies and procedures, and providing updates and advice on existing Affiliate / Region and System-wide policies. The Counsel role will have subject matter expertise in medical staff and physician services.
This role will provide legal support and guidance to the affiliated medical staffs, Medical Staff Officers and Medical Staff Professionals. Counsel will be expected to provide advice related to issues facing affiliated Medical Staffs, including but not limited to, peer review, credentialing, accreditation standards, impairment, and exclusive contracting. The position will also be expected to draft and review Medical Staff bylaws, rules, regulations and policies and will be expected to deliver training to address identified legal risks. The Medical Staff Counsel will also be expected to monitor and coordinate work and expenditures for outside counsel to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of legal services. The successful candidate will be a motivated, business -oriented legal professional with healthcare experience and experience working with physicians and physician leadership. Education: Must possess a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Licensure: Must be a member in good standing with a state bar. A member in good standing with the State Bar of California is desired. Experience: Must have demonstrated at least 3-5 years of significant business and/or healthcare law experience, including, primary and independent responsibility for significant transactions. Must have 3 years experience working with healthcare clients, particulary physicians and other Medical Staffs. Special Skills: Candidate must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to translate legal complexities into terms readily understood by management and line personnel. Must have demonstrated initiative and an ability to work in a fast paced complex matrixed managed organization. Must be able to demonstrate strong client management and project management skills as well as the ability to work successfully both independently and within a team.
