This position has complete responsibility of performing design tasks relating to fire suppression and alarm systems, as well as analysis of existing systems, and relevant building and fire codes.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
§ Performs engineering related to fire suppression and alarms system design; often includes complete system design/layouts.
§ Performs and/or evaluates water supply testing, including those from hydrants and fire pumps.
§ Coordinates project assignments with those of other engineers and technicians in his/her discipline group.
§ Interacts with clients; attends design review meetings.
§ Prepares and provides technical reports to clients and authorities having jurisdiction.
§ Performs code analysis/interpretation for clients; works with government officials to define code requirements for given projects.
§ Evaluates existing building fire protection systems for capabilities respective to the current occupancy; provides guidance for improvements as necessary.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
§ Engineering Bachelor’s Degree with a sound understanding of Fire Protection fundamentals.
§ Possess a PE, or FE (EIT) certification and has the ability to take the PE exam within 12 months of hire.
§ Minimum five (5) years of experience required with strong technical skills, including competency in application and
interpretation of National Fire Codes, particularly NFPA 13 and/or 72; or comparable expertise relating to FM Global or similar HPR standards.
§ Effective verbal/written communications, time management, interpersonal and organizational skills.
§ Display high level of initiative and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with clear expectations and timelines.
§ Ability to work collaboratively with individuals at all levels in the organization in a team environment.
§ Preferred: Familiarity with International Code Council (ICC) Codes or federal design standards; experience working on specific Federal governmental agency projects (e.g. Military, GSA, BIA, V.A., etc.); experience with state agencies, (e.g. MnSCU, U of Minn, or comparable agencies); experience with fire modeling, smoke evacuation and life safety surveys.
CRITICAL REPORTING AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
This position will require effective interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills to build and maintain reporting and working relationships within the Market Sector, office and company.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION
§ Requires ability to travel up to 25% of time.
§ Requires prolonged sitting with the occasional need for walking, standing, bending, stooping and stretching.
§ Requires the ability to lift 20 lbs or more.
§ Requires a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record.
