Position Description:Reports to VP/Publisher of Non-Fiction Books - Develops and & executes innovative, non-fiction, standards-based book publishing plans for students in Grades K-8 from inception to sales launch.
- Identifies publishing opportunities and articulates publist development based on market needs. Publist to include product specs, the commissioning of authors, packagers and designers to develop new Children's Press series and backlist relaunches that will generate future growth. Oversight of all K-8 acquisitions.
- Serves as key liaison between Editorial, Production & Marketing, to ensure publishing is within deadlines & established budgets and fulfills gaps in the marketplace.
- Determines editorial responsibilities for in-house staff & freelancers to ensure the timely delivery of books that support the needs and interests of learners in the 21st century.
- Supervises, trains and manages and evaluates Children's Press editorial staff members.
- Supervises the publishing work of outside resources, including writers, freelancers, consultants, content advisors, proofreaders/copyeditors & all independent contractors. Manages and executes P&L's and Contracts.
- Identifies key publishing opportunities/brands that can be leveraged through Scholastic's various distribution channels including: libraries, classrooms, books fairs, book clubs and trade
Qualifications:- Successful candidate will have a BA in Language Arts, Education, Curriculum and Instruction or a related degree.
- At least 7-8 years of experience and a proven track record of "excellence in children's non-fiction publishing" for students in grades K-8, (trade, library, school) & management of editorial and design staff, freelancers and packagers.
- Prior teaching experience is a plus
