*Backup Operations Specialist - SMS

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Backup Operations Specialist provides operational support and guidance to customers to support the management and use of their chosen backup solutions. Responsible for performing a wide variety of daily BuR management tasks as well as providing recommendations and methodologies for effective and efficient backup operations. He or she must be capable of working with minimal supervision. He or she must be considered an expert in the design, implementation and management of Veritas Netbackup and its related backup tools including tape operations. Knowledgeable of industry best practices for BuR operations in complex storage environments. He or she must have demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with Sales, Services and external customers.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· As the Backup Operations Specialist, provides proactive recommendations to the customer for improving BuR operations and effective use of their chosen backup solutions to help maximize their satisfaction with EMC managed BuR services.

· Responsible for providing daily operational tasks of a backup administrator up to and including Media handling and backup offsite procedures at the customer site(s). Managing the cloning process in Veritas Netbackup and monitoring media scratch pools for both physical and virtual media. Administering BuR procedures based on standardized procedures as outlined by EMC and customer best practice documentation.

· Actively contributes to the configuration, layout and performance tuning of the BuR infrastructure.

· Participates in the execution of the business continuance and disaster recovery planning and testing as agreed upon by EMC and the customer.

· Performs necessary backup infrastructure maintenance in accordance with EMC and customer’s change management policies.

· Participates in the continual review and improvement of existing backup operational policies and procedures in compliance with EMC’s Global BuR best practices.

· Prepares, maintains and submits activity/progress reports and time recording/management reports in accordance with published procedures utilizing native backup tool reporting as well as EMC Backup Advisor (EBA). Keeps EMC Delivery Managers and Account Team informed of scheduled activities and alerting of any issues promptly.

· Serve as a mentor to BuR operations specialists and/or client resources when needed.


SKILLS SUMMARY

· 2-5 years of BuR Administration in complex heterogeneous customer environments with hands-on experience with Veritas Netbackup software product.

· 2-5 years of Unix System Administration in an enterprise environment

· 1-2 years in Storage/System Administration with EMC storage integration/implementation of storage management solutions in an open systems environment

· Physical Tape library hardware and software management (STK, ADIC, IBM) (ACSLS and Gresham are a strong plus)

· Network Tuning and troubleshooting in backup environments

· Shell and/or PERL Scripting

· Experience using VXFS, VXDMP, Volume Manager, Network Operations Manager (NOM) and Veritas Backup Reporter (VBR).

· Working experience with at least one Systems Management Tool such as HP Open View, BMC PEM, IBM Tivoli, or CA Unicenter preferred

· Working knowledge of SAN and NAS technologies and concepts

· Comprehensive knowledge of Backup/Restore technologies, policies, and procedures

· Good verbal communication skills

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

· Bachelors (Technical) or equivalent
2 to 5 Years of Experience


Recommended Education Required: Bachelors degree preferred
Recommended Experience required: 3-6 years
