Job Description:
- This position is responsible for designing and partnering with network technicians in implementing and maintaining the local area networks that typically link to numerous computer platforms, operating systems, and network topologies across a widely dispersed geographical area.
- Work to ensure that the site network and network management environment is reliable and that performance exceeds that of contracted service levels.
- Operates under general supervision.
- Assist with creating the engineering design documents for BAN/LAN.
- Uses established best practice design to develop templates and documentation to improve operation procedures.
- Work to meet the design and implementation milestones.
- Participate in the design documentation for the BAN/LAN.
- Assist with technical escalations for network issues including the backbone routing, customer router configuration, and Internet related services.
- May provide leadership and guidance to technicians with implementation and maintenance of the network.
- Work in cooperation with the Network Operation Centers.
- Continue knowledge and certifications of competencies will be expected to be acquired and maintained particularly on the CISCO equipment.
- Position will routinely serve as on-call network engineer in rotation along with other base staff.
- Availability to be contacted 24/7 is required.
- Position will be required to have and carry appropriate cellphone and/or pager.
- Off-shift, night and/or weekend work may be required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors or Associates degree in Engineering or Science.
- Strong non-degree candidates with advanced IT industry experience will also be considered.
- 1-3 years experience that includes network design, operational support, hands-on implementing and configuration of network devices such as servers, routers, hubs, switches, UPS, desktop computers, and cabling in a large BAN/LAN/WAN environment.
- 1-3 years of LAN/WAN working experience with at least 2 or more years experience as a network technician.
- Knowledge of, and experience using, Cisco's Catalyst (set-based) OS version 6.3 and above and IOS 12.0 and above
- Experience in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting VLANs using Cisco equipment, to include intimate knowledge of Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), inter-VLAN routing, and trunking with ISL and 802.1q.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Cisco certifications CCNA preferred.
