Principal QA Engineer - Avamar Louisville, CO

As a member of the Software Quality Engineering team within the EMC Software Group, you will perform a wide variety of engineering tasks required to support the testing and testability of storage management software. This level of job involves working under limited direction and within general practices, providing technical expertise by independently determining and developing approaches to solutions for a wide range of complex software engineering problems. Candidate understands company goals, practices and product strategies and applies them when resolving a variety of problems. Uses judgments and creativity and sound technical knowledge to obtain and recommend solutions. Assignments may include new products as well as upgrades and enhancements, or modifications to existing products.

Responsibilities start during design and continue through the testing cycle to GA. Specific tasks include: 1) Participate in reviews of all requirements documents: product requirements document; software requirements specification document; GUI specification document, 2) Author and/or review test plans and test reports, 3) Participate in test case development and test case reviews for functional, system, regression, performance and stability testing, 4) Participate in weekly program team meetings, 5) Execute automation test scripts to help further the quality and testability of the developed software, 6) Generate test and defect metrics report during the testing cycle, 7) Setup and manage test configurations, 8) Help with the administration of the engineering lab equipment and configurations in the Louisville site.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for the design, development, and implementation of methods to test and troubleshoot newly developed or redesigned products. Assignments include planning test and diagnostic programs, conducting tests, completing specifications and procedures for products, and documenting results of tests. Performs development and execution of software/hardware quality methods and processes, and performs installations and runs quality assurance programs to test, identify, reproduce, and report defects. Develops acceleration and analytical methods and processes to enhance and ensure the reliability and quality of new and existing products. Other duties include:

• Performs installations and runs quality assurance programs to test, identify, reproduce, and report defects


• Defines and implements test case design rules, techniques, and methods to set reliability and quality goals


• Provides input to reliability and quality planning to identify potential problems with new and existing products


• Following the EMC software development process, perform a wide variety of engineering tasks required to support function, system, regression and other associated testing of storage management products


• Evaluate test strategies and determine the priority of test case implementation and execution so that quality is not compromised


• Debug complex software problems encountered while testing products


• Setup, configure and maintain complex test environments


• Help the site’s lab administrators with maintaining the engineering lab
  
  Skills:

• Ability to combine learning and application of what is learned in a timely manner to ensure testing requirements and expectations are met


• Experience testing applications in a UNIX/Linux environment


• Experience testing applications in a Windows environment


• Experience with hardware and software setup/configuration


• Familiar with bug tracking and test tracking systems (Rational CQ, Test Director is a plus)


• Experience in testing methodologies and theories, test plan development, test case design, test execution practices, data collection and root cause analysis techniques, and reporting practices required


• Familiarity with industry QA tools and the proven ability to learn and apply new tools and processes as needed is required


• Experience and knowledge in computer system, storage systems and storage area networks recommended


• Experience in quality metrics collection and management recommended

Experience: 4- 7 years
Education: Bachelors degree (technical)
