The Department of Bioprocess Analytical & Formulation Sciences at the Merck Research Laboratories in West Point, PA, is seeking an experienced scientist to join our biophysical and biochemical analyses group. This group provides technical and testing support to various departments including Basic Biological and Vaccine Research and The Merck Manufacturing Division. The effort also includes maintaining program "dashboards" to ensure timely customer support.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:
  • Work as part of an innovative team in developing and applying biophysical methods in the evaluation, characterization and stabilization of a broad spectrum of biological products ranging from therapeutic proteins to live virus vaccines. These methods include, but are not limited to, MALS and other techniques for molecular size analyses, separation technogies (FFF), calorimetry and ultracentrifugation.
  • Develop, work with and support advanced technologies and instrumentation toward these goals.
  • Scientific supervision, oversight of outsourcing activities, some program coordination and equipment maintenance.

Qualifications

Education:
  • PhD required

Required:

  • At least 5 years of post-doctoral or industrial experience.
  • Candidate must demonstrate expertise and hands-on experience in the application of biophysical methodologies in characterization of biomolecules.
  • Expertise should include theoretical and working knowledge of light scattering methodologies such as multi-angle light scattering (MALS), and varied spectroscopic techniques (CD, AUC, etc.).
  • Qualified candidate is required to be highly motivated and possessing excellent verbal communication and writing skills.
  • The candidate is expected to maintain a high degree of scientific rigor under all circumstances and be accessible to provide scientific supervision.
  • The candidate must also demonstrate ability to work effectively both independently and in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • The individual can be expected to represent the department at cross-functional team meetings in support of data or decisions arising thereof.

Preferred:

  • Experience in innovative solutions to biological particle manipulation, aggregation source, molecular size determination and stabilization over a wide size range of biologics (proteins to viruses).
  • GLP/GMP experience.
  • Significant pharmaceutical experience.
