Security Engineer



UW Medicine Information Technology Services is a shared services organization, which supports all of UW Medicine including UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, UW School of Medicine, UW Physicians, UW Physicians Network, Eastside Specialty Center, Hall Health Primary Care Center, and Sports Medicine. IT Services is responsible for the development, acquisition, implementation, maintenance, and support of enterprise computing systems, applications and infrastructure which support the Institutional mission of patient care, teaching, and research in a 24 hour 7 day mission-critical medical care environment.

The Senior Security Engineer will work as a member of the IT Services Security Operations team. Security Operations provides a range of security services and/or technical expertise in threat analysis, vulnerability management, access control, firewall management, intrusion detection and prevention, virtual private networking, penetration testing, audits, incident response and forensic investigation, among others. Expertise is provided to the organization via managed infrastructure systems, documentation, security guidelines and procedures, training, consulting, and through representation on institutional committees.

The Senior Security Engineer will report to the Associate Director for Information Security and will collaborate with other Senior Security Engineers and Security Program Analysts within the IT Services Information Security Program. Strong working relationships within IT Services as well as with other UW Medicine and University departments is required. The ability to communicate effectively with nontechnical staff at a variety of levels from end users to executive management is also critical to success in the position. The Senior Security Engineer must be able to think independently and critically, and to conduct themselves with high standards of professionalism at all times.

Duties & Responsibilities
• Design, implement, manage, and support appropriate solutions for enterprise security infrastructure, including host-based and appliance firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, virtual private networks, vulnerability scanning systems, penetration testing, and forensics analysis.
• Research and develop security procedures and guidelines in support of security policy, including topics such as data classification, system configuration, malware protection, access control, encryption, risk assessment, and disaster recovery.
• Perform system security audit activities to provide assurance of adequate and effective security controls.
• Monitor and analyze emerging security threats and related vulnerabilities. Recommend appropriate actions, safeguards, and notifications.
• Provide technical leadership on security incident response teams.
• Conduct computer forensics investigations to establish timelines, determine root cause, identify data exposures, and recommend corrective actions.
• Provide consulting to all UW Medicine entities on a wide range of security topics.
• Provide technical leadership and/or project management for security related projects.
• Provide systems administration for systems owned by the team.
• Develop and manage web content in support of the team’s documentation, communication, and education goals.
• Represent the Information Security Program by participating in technical advisory groups, project teams, and other committees.
• Participate in on-call responsibilities in support of a 24 x 7 production environment.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements: Minimum Education
• Bachelor’s degree in a technical, scientific, or business administration field. Equivalent experience may substitute for the educational requirement.

Minimum Work Experience
• Three years hands-on working experience as an engineer or analyst in information security disciplines.
• Three years systems and security administration in Windows, UNIX, Linux, and/or Mac environments, including development in popular scripting languages for automation, data collection, and reporting.
• Three years experience managing host-based and network appliance firewalls, including rule set design, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
• Two years experience on security incident response teams with some experience as team leader.
• Two years experience with incident investigations and forensics analysis using a variety of open source and/or commercial tools.
• One year conducting system security audits, control analysis, risk assessments, or related processes.
• One year managing end-user and/or site-to-site VPN services.
• One year operating a systematic vulnerability scanning and remediation program.
• One year managing intrusion detection and prevention systems.
• Experience writing security guidelines, procedures, and other technical documentation
• Experience developing and managing web content, including good knowledge of HTML, CSS, and open source or commercial web publishing tools.
• Experience with Juniper appliance firewalls and Netscreen Security Manager
• Experience with Real Secure Desktop Protector and Symantec Endpoint Protection
• Experience with Juniper SSL VPN products
• Experience with Tipping Point Intrusion Protection System
• Experience with EnCase forensics tools and Encase Enterprise client
• Project management experience
• Current security certification (e.g., CISSP, GIAC, EnCE)
• Organized and detail oriented, able to multi-task effectively
• Excellent problem analysis and problem solving capabilities
• Strong interpersonal and customer relationship skills
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
