The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a Power Electronics Electrical Engineer. With the world’s highest flux reactor-based neutron source (the High Flux Isotope Reactor) and the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source (the Spallation Neutron Source), ORNL has become the world’s foremost center for neutron science. Research at these facilities will encompass the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and universities all over the world.   • Working under the guidance of senior engineer(s), analyzes a variety of engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and other simulation techniques, including tools such as PSpice, Simplorer, Matlab, Simulink, LabView, and/or finite element analysis programs. With the help of senior engineer(s), develops and/or specifies deployable designs based on engineering analysis with initial emphasis on power electronics controls systems.
  • Produces accurate and concise technical reports, design documentation, and interface documentation with support and guidance from other engineers.
  • Participates in R&D and prototyping of technical equipment, possibly including laying out printed circuit boards with board designers that meet the desired functional and safety requirements and troubleshooting of electronic equipment at the printed circuit board level using conventional test equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators and meters).
  • Develop and implement testing program(s) for technical design solutions and insure appropriate data acquired to assess performance of the design proposals.
  • Accurately and reliably communicates technical status and performance to ORNL management and peer engineers.
  • As appropriate, interfaces and interacts with vendors and/or subcontractors. Some domestic and/or foreign travel may be required.
  • As appropriate, publishes and represents SNS at conferences and/or workshops. Some domestic and/or foreign travel may be required to support collaborations or attend conferences or workshops.
  • Ensures compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics.
  • May direct or train technicians and craft workers.

Qualifications Required:

BS in electrical engineering, plus 1-5 years working experience in the field of electrical engineering. Must have a sound understanding of power electronics, electromagnetic fields, high power semiconductor devices, and associated control systems and have the ability to quickly grasp complex technical problems. Knowledge of Field Programmable Gate Arrays and/or Digital Signal Processors desirable. Advanced work in a particle accelerator or pulsed power/power electronics field desired. Some knowledge of printed circuit board design programs desirable. Excellent communication skills, ability to work individually or as part of a team.
