POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Standard Hours: 12-hour night shifts 19:00-07:30, weekends required.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education -
• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
• BSN Preferred
• Current Registered Nurse licensure to practice nursing in California
• Current CPR and ACLS certification required.
Skills -
• Able to do work in spite of frequent interruptions
• Ability to read work product of others, computer/monitor screens, computer printouts
• Able to perform mathematical calculations
• High level of concentration and attention to detail
• Ability to work with a team, prioritize work and make decisions regarding patient care, implements nursing actions independently, interacts appropriately with others
Experience -
• 6 months or more of acute care experience required
Work Conditions -
• High exposure to communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens, rare exposure to toxic substances such as radiation, nuclear isotopes, chemotherapeutic agents.
• Some computer terminal work
• At times the job can be demanding and highly stressful
• Varied shifts, including nights and weekends
Physical Requirements -
• Frequent walking and standing
• Frequent pushing and pulling
• Able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
The ED staff RN is a professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability for nursing actions and emergency care which includes, but are not limited to:
1. Evaluating patients presenting complaint at triage
2. Assessing and identifying actual or potential health problems
3. Communicating information to the physician about patient concerns/needs
4. Identifying needed nursing regimen; executing nursing regimen through the selection, performance, management and evaluation of nursing action
5. Assessing health status for the purpose of providing nursing care, providing health teaching and/or home care instructions
6. Providing care based on patient's and /or significant others age and level of growth and development
7. Administering medications, treatments and executing regimens prescribed by licensed physicians
8. Cares for patients of all ages, from neonates/infant through elderly
9. Recognizes the role and participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team working towards attaining mission, vision, and goal of meeting patients, significant other's physical, emotional and spiritual needs in a dignified manner.
10. Is knowledgeable about how to protect self and hospital from bio/chemical contamination
11. Understands and complies with EMTALA requirements
1. Direct patient care by using management skills to provide nursing practice appropriate to patient care needs and age, in a cost effective manner and acting as a preceptor for nurses orienting to the unit:
- Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other practitioners as required and adjust nursing care processes as indicated to unsure optimal patient care
- Implements patient histories, assesses patient's conditions, and develops individualized care plans for assigned patients. Documents on care plans as patient care evolves, including resolutions of problems
- Assesses patient educational needs and barriers to learning to implements patient education and documents teaching
- Administers and controls narcotics and medications accurately and in a timely manner and signs out narcotics and medications according to hospital policy
- Maintains accurate documentation of patient's progress, nursing care, records and reports
- Follows all Core Measures requirements and documents
2. Manager of patient care: Manages patient flow and staff assignments on the unit; keeps physicians apprised of patients' condition:
- Provides nursing report on all patients in a precise, informational and confidential manner
- Keeps MD informed of any changes in patient status
- Knowledgeable of and follow all Patient Care Service policies
- Follow and document all National Patient Safety Goals
- Knowledgeable of and apply nursing bundle standards to improve patient satisfaction
- Collaborates with other departments to assure a multi-disciplinary team approach
3. Patient advocate: Applies ethical, legal and professional standards to patient care by maintaining communication and interpersonal relationships with hospital patients, staff/department, physicians and the community on a first priority basis:
- Knowledge of policy intervention on behalf of a patient.
- Demonstrates patients/families comfort.
- Advocate and applies ethical, legal and professional standards to patient care.
4. Discharge planner: Demonstrates knowledge and participates in discharge planning and the quality improvement process
- CHF instructions and documentations
- Demonstrates knowledge and participates in discharge planning process
5. Department team member: Assumes a leadership role and demonstrates the necessary skills to influence others to achieve positive results:
- Upholds department standards and mission

- Provide support and assist staff as needed or requested
6. Communicates frequently by utilizing the chain of command of House Supervisor > Department Manager > Chief Nurse Executive to inform them of department issues or concerns

8. Other duties as assigned

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs the nursing process through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of safe, therapeutic care for patients with overt and covert needs, appropriate to patient age. Assists with managing the patient care administered by other members of the nursing staff. Assumes responsibility and accountability of total patient care and relief charge nurse duties. This position treats/cares for patients of all ages. This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of the Organization.
