This position will need to recognize the needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients, i.e., understand normal patterns of adult behavior and look for signs of normal aging; prior experience with various age groups is preferred. Current RN license in the State of Illinois. Current APRN (CNS, NP, or CNM) license. CPR Certification. Job Description: Practitioner: Demonstrates expert clinical judgment and autonomy, provides health care providers with recommended guidelines to achieve optimal level of practice in the area of GI oncology. 1) Initiates or facilitates interdisciplinary dialogue with the GI cancer team to establish a comprehensive and consistent plan of care
2) Provides education in the area of GI cancers to patients and their support systems related to disease process, care requirements and community resources
Educator: Develops and provides ongoing education programs for healthcare providers in the area of GI cancer to ensure availability of current information regarding patient care and maintenance/enhancement of clinical skills 1) Provides staff with current clinical information in area of specialty
Consultant: Serves as a consultant and/or resource person for hospital personnel in area of specialization. 1) Provides GI cancer clinical resources for nursing staff and healthcare providers
2) Provides consultation to staff, management, administration and other disciplines related to the field of GI cancer.
3) Disseminates professional/clinical knowledge regarding prevention, detection and treatment of GI cancer to the nursing community through professional literature, publications or public speaking.
This GI Advanced Practice Nurse will provide patient navigation services for the GI cancer population and their families throughout the cancer care continuum. Patient navigation services include individualized assistance offered to patients, survivors, families, and caregivers to help guide them through the complexities of the health care system and facilitate timely access to quality medical and psychosocial care.
This Advanced Practice Nurse works with the GI oncology patient from diagnosis through all phases of the cancer experience on an inpatient and outpatient basis. The GI Advanced Practice Nurse may assist with coordinating care among providers, identifying and scheduling appointments, arranging for translation/interpretation services, assuring availability of pertinent results for appointments and helping to coordinate services necessary to move the patient through the continuum in a timely and comprehensive fashion.
Provides a high degree of professional competence and demonstrates a high level of autonomy in a specialized field of nursing-specifically oncology. Specialization in nursing practice includes in-depth graduate study of relevant theories and scientific knowledge related to a select patient population (oncology), which promotes ability to analyze and refine nursing practice and to generate clinical practice knowledge. APRNSs integrate education, research, management, leadership, and consultation into clinical roles, and they function in collegial relationships with nursing peers and other professionals and individuals that influence the health environment. The scope of practice will impact patient care through contact with patients and their support systems throughout the health-illness continuum. Accountabilities: 1. Accepts referrals and collaborates with physicians, nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary team in planning the care of patients needing specialized nursing. Initiates referral to other healthcare providers and resource agencies as necessary. 4. Administrative/Leadership: Demonstrates leadership qualities that reflect accountability and interdependence consistent with goals of the organization. 5. Researcher: Promotes research findings by making appropriate recommendations for changes in policies, procedures, and practice.
