![]() General Construction Equipment Operator Job Description As an Army National Guard General Construction Equipment Operator, you’ll build the skills and knowledge that will make you a hot commodity in your civilian career while you build projects as varied as airfields, roads, dams, and buildings for the Army National Guard. You will be trained to expertly handle air compressors and special-purpose construction machines engaged in compaction, ditching, pumping, and auguring so the Guard can carry out its dual federal and state missions. General Construction Equipment Operator duties include the safe and effective operation of pneumatic tools, small emplacement excavator and attachments; performing digging, backfilling, and loading operations; operating self-propelled compaction rollers and water distributors for dust control; operating earth augers, rotary sweepers and tillers; as well as assisting in combat engineer missions. These skills are in demand by building contractors, state highway agencies, rock quarries, well drilling interests, and construction firms. So by joining the Army National Guard as a General Construction Equipment Operator, you will set yourself up for success in your civilian career. Earn while you learn Get paid to learn! Join the Guard and you will learn valuable job skills while earning a regular paycheck and qualifying for tuition assistance. After nine weeks of Basic Training, where you will learn fundamental Soldiering skills, you will attend seven weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), which will include a combination of hands-on and classroom training where you will learn general construction principles, how to operate different types of construction equipment, as well as their maintenance and repair. You may also qualify for a number of three-year operating engineer apprenticeship programs which are administered by the International Union of Operating Engineers and the Associated General Contractors of America, Inc.
