Pérez, Chancellor Position Summary This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE position as counselor with emphasis with the majority assignment in the Division of Metas Program located at San Jose City College. This is a grant-funded non-tenured categorical position within a federally-funded program under the Title V Hispanic Serving Institution grant. The grant period is from 10/1/2008 to 9/30/2013. Continuation is contingent upon annual funding. The assignment may include day, evening and weekend responsibilities. This position is represented by the Faculty Association Unit, AFT 6157. The Metas Program is a student support service dedicated to increasing the graduation and transfer rates of our Latino/a student population. Metas is the Spanish word for "goals" and the Metas Program focus is helping Latino/a students determine a clear path to successfully achieve their academic goals. Among the Metas Program services are: Learning Communities specifically designed for our Latino/a students; tutoring; academic and career counseling; assistance with textbooks; a Destinos Summer Bridge program; a Fall Kick-Off for new students; math refresher labs; and workshops to assist students with financial aid, educational plans and placement exams. The SJCC Metas Program was established through a Title V grant. The Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Program assists eligible Hispanic-serving institutions of higher education to expand their capacity to serve Hispanic and low-income students. The San José City College Metas Program goal is to realize institutional change for the increased success of our Latina/o student population. The Metas Program Counselor reports to the Metas Program Director. This position supports the implementation of the Title V Hispanic Serving Institution five-year grant awarded to the college to increase the success of San Jose City College Latino students. Provide academic, vocational, career and personal guidance and counseling for prospective, new and continuing students. 2. Teach guidance classes and/or workshops, coordinate programs or act as a consultant to faculty regarding student performance and retention. 3. Participate in outreach functions that may include serving as a liaison with high schools, mentors, community-based organizations and four-year colleges/universities. 4. Act as liaison counselor to one or more academic disciplines. 5. Participate in the implementation of the District-wide matriculation including admissions, assessment, and orientations, counseling and follow up components. 6. Participate in articulation and recruitment networking with high schools and transfer institutions. 7. Utilize the district's computerized course prerequisite system. 8. Maintain currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility. 9. Communicate subject matter clearly, correctly and effectively. 10. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles. 11. Teach students effectively. 12. Use methods and materials appropriate to the subject matter. 13. Use appropriate preparation and organizational skills in area of assignment. 14. Demonstrate commitment to professional development including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc. 15. Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve; and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination. 3. Success integrating diversity as appropriate into the major duties outlined in the job description and in the duties listed in the District's hiring policy; or demonstrated equivalent transferable skills to do so.
