Chemical processes produce in bulk form, the high quality complex chemicals used in Merck's most valuable human health, animal health and agricultural products. We then convert these basic chemicals into safe effective pharmaceuticals through formulation and packaging processes. Biologically derived products follow a similar path.

  • Chemical Process Development & Commercialization (Rahway, NJ) performs process development and demonstration for new chemical processes;
  • Global Vaccines Technology and Engineering (West Point, PA, Elkton, VA) is responsible for process implementation, validation and maintenance for biological processes;
  • Biological Science & Strategy (Rahway, NJ) is responsible for the development and implementation of therapeutic protein processes;

The successful candidate will apply engineering, science, and business skills to help Merck carry out its core functions in one of the following areas. A number of different entry points are possible for a new hire, in either our research or our manufacturing division.

PROCESS DEVELOPMENT, SCALE UP AND LAUNCH
  • Work in teams to bring research discoveries to full production scale by applying engineering, biology, chemistry and pharmaceutics skills to bench-scale processes.
  • Conceive, develop and implement new processing and manufacturing technologies
  • Work with teams to develop processes for new products, using chemically- or biologically- derived products
  • Support process development and product development with pilot plant scale up, drug supply preparation and technology transfer to operations groups
EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES DESIGN
  • Design and build advanced manufacturing plants, laboratory and office facilities
  • Involvement with all phases of project management from the first engineering drawing to the last phase of project start up

MANUFACTURING
  • Support line production and maintenance operations
  • Maintain manufacturing processes at high levels of performance
  • Engineer plant site improvements to enhance safety, quality and the environment
  • Optimize existing processes to achieve improvements in process quality, yield and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • This position requires candidate to be currently enrolled in a PhD program in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, BioMedical Engineering (process option), Bioengineering, or related field.
  • Ideal candidate will possess superior communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be graduating between August 2009 and August 2010.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship.
