Measures, by means of an electromyograph, impulses, frequencies and
differences in evoked potential tests between various areas of the body
to obtain data for use in diagnosis of nerve conduction studies.
Prepares all IS transactions to ensure patient information and exam
results are recorded in a timely manner for patient medical record and
billing purposes.
I. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Obtains patient history, including problems and behaviors.
• Explains and prepares patient for NCS procedure, including making him or her as comfortable as possible.
•
Measures electrical activity in peripheral nerves, using
electromyograph (EMG) instrument, for use by physician in diagnosing
neuromuscular disorders: Explains procedures to patient to obtain
cooperation and relieve anxieties during test.
• Applies electrode gel on patient's skin to ensure contact of electrodes.
• Attaches surface recording electrodes to limb in which activity is being measured to detect electrical impulse
• Attaches electrodes to electrode cables or leads connected to EMG instrument and selects nerve conduction mode on EMG.
• Operates EMG instrument to record electrical activity in peripheral nerves.
• Activates surface stimulator electrode to deliver electrical stimulus to depolarize peripheral nerve.
• Monitors response on computer monitor display and records nerve conduction velocity.
•
Measures and records time and distance between stimulus and response,
manually or using computer, and calculates velocity of electrical
impulse in peripheral nerve.
• Removes electrodes from patient upon conclusion of test and cleans electrode gel from skin.
•
Completes paperwork, including charge slips for NCS and complete
records on all normal and abnormal NCS for time periods established by
protocol.
• Cleans and maintains equipment, including requesting maintenance repairs.
• Coordinate and organize supplies, equipment, and instruments needed for procedures.
