Responsibilities:

The function of the Laboratory Assistant is to respond to the needs of our clients, both external and internal, in the following areas: Accessioning, Phlebotomy and/or Clerical and Microbiology Set-up.

Phlebotomy duties include collecting blood from all age groups (infants through the elderly). Duties also include transport of specimens to the laboratory for testing, either via the tube system or on foot.

Accessioning duties are assisting technical personnel in preparation and organization of patient specimens for testing. Must perform waived tests if checked off by designated technical personnel.

Clerical duties include being the liaison between the laboratory and outpatient customers. Must possess good communication, computer and clerical skills to relate well with unit staff and physicians in order to place the appropriate test orders, give test results or transfer to the appropriate technical area.

Microbiology duties encompass the primary plating of microbiology samples for future testing. Performs job duties in accordance with the tenets of the laboratory's mission and goals.




Qualifications:

Must possess experience in the job function areas evident by past performance at DMC or
other facilities.
2. Must have good customer service skills with internal and external customers.
3. Must actively support and may participate in hospital- or laboratory-based
Performance Improvement initiatives.
4. Must have excellent working knowledge of the standard operating procedures in
three (3) of the four (4) job function categories: Phlebotomy, Accessioning, Clerical,
and Microbiology Set-up.
5. Must be proficient in those three (3) job function categories.
6. Must contribute to the teamwork of client response team by assisting others
when they need help, covering others for lunch and breaks, addressing members
of the team respectfully, train, orient and support new employees and other team
members. Must contribute to the overall teamwork of DMC laboratories and
the organization as a whole in the same manner.
7. Must be familiar with backup procedures for computer downtimes.

B. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

1. Keeps work area clean and decontaminated according to policy.
2. Adheres to all laboratory safety policies, exposure control, infection control,
hazardous materials, chemical hygiene, and fire.
3. Performs job duties utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment and
safe work practices.
4. Responds appropriately to fire, disaster and other emergency preparedness drills.
5. Properly disposes of sharps.
6. Practices standard precautions regarding glove handwashing, specimen transport,
and individual patient precautions.
