State of the art medical facility is currently hiring a coding specialist. Excellent Full Time opportunity for an experienced coder with HIMS certification.
The coding specialist is responsible for monitoring coding and abstracting all inpatient, ambulatory, observation, and emergency room patient records using ICD-9-CM and CPT/HCPCS coding rules, federal guidelines, and other hospital guidelines. Participates in a team effort to keep accounts receivables to a minimum of 4 days. Orients, trains and assists coding staff in conjunction with Coding Manager. The individual in this great position will assist in the training and ongoing development of quality assurance program, and participate in monthly staff meetings, education, and brainstorming sessions to improve workflow and processes.
The coder is willing to help where needed to include covering for department so phones are answered, visitors are greeted, and physicians are properly assisted. The coding specialist will display a service oriented attitude.
The individual in this position will as as primary medical staff contact for all coding issues, including updating and informing staff of new or significant changes in Federal regulation that impact hospital reimbursement, coding compliance issues/rules, etc. Interaction is initiated to expedite billing and/or seek clarification and/or to educate physicians. Coding specialist will handle billing issues and patient account questions in a timely manner as to not delay billing.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Associates (RHIT) or Bachelors (RHIA) Degree with certification in Health Information Management with 2 years experience coding both inpatient and ambulatory acute care records preferred. Equivalent experience certified as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) also accepted at a minimum.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Must have knowledge of appropriate use of ICD-9-CM and CPT/HCPCS coding in an acute care setting. Higher level education for oral, written, and computer skills required. Must be extremely attentive to detail and accuracy. Must have organizational skills and can meet deadlines even under stressful time constraints. Ability to use other office equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Busy office environment working with extremely confidential patient information. Occasional stress due to deadlines and pressure to maintain productivity. Overtime work may be necessary. Physical ability to sit in front of a computer screen for long periods of time. Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and reach in order to file and retrieve records.
