![]() COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER – CAMPUS POLICE DEPARTMENT Closing Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2009 POSITION AVAILABLE: One regular position, 16 hours per week, 12 months per year, on the main Oceanside Campus. The normal work schedule will be Saturday and Sunday, 3 – 11 p.m. The individual selected for this position may be assigned to any of the three district sites during any hours of operation. COMPENSATION: Starting salary of $1,336.50 per month and 2.5% shift differential ($33.41/month) based on the work schedule listed above, plus vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay. BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Campus Police Sergeant, this non-sworn position provides safety and crime prevention checks of the College’s campuses (Oceanside and San Elijo) and the Community Learning Center. Patrols campus by foot, vehicle and on bicycle to deter crime. Observes and reports suspicious persons and circumstances to College Police supervisors and/or local law enforcement agencies. Participates as a member of the Emergency Preparedness Team. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (E = essential job function) 1) Develop working knowledge of security systems including campus intrusion alarms, fire alarms, lighting, and building locks. (E) 2) Contact campus police supervisors for emergency situations and notify proper district personnel or other agencies. Report suspicious persons or circumstances to supervisors and/or local police. (E) 3) Perform security checks of all campus doors and windows. Secure doors as needed. Patrol parking lots. Inspect campus light fixtures, complete lighting surveys, and document and report any maintenance-related issues. (E) 4) Participate in Emergency Preparedness training on a regular basis. (E) 5) Inspect portable Emergency Preparedness generators, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) devices, and document and report any maintenance-related issues. (E) 6) Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1) Equivalent to graduation from high school. 2) Minimum of one year of security experience. (Note: a “year” is defined as the equivalent to one year of full-time experience) LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver’s license; District approved driving record. Must pass background investigation that includes a FBI/DOJ fingerprint check. Polygraph exam, psychological evaluation. CPR, first aid and AED training will be required within 30 days of hire date. KNOWLEDGE OF: 1) District organization, operations, Department rules, policies and objectives. 2) General security and safety principles. 3) All police terminology and radio codes. 4) Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. 5) Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. ABILITY TO: 1) Exercise good judgment. 2) Analyze situations accurately. 3) Ability to stay alert and observant. 4) Perform detail-oriented tasks. 5) Understand and work within scope of authority. 6) Operate a variety of equipment, including vehicles. 7) Effectively operate safety and self-defense devices and equipment including TASER ® and pepper spray (Oleoresin Capsicum). 8) Understand and follow oral and written directions. 9) Work independently with little direction. 10) Lift objects weighing up to 35 pounds. 11) Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 12) Drive from Oceanside campus to San Elijo Campus and Community Learning Center to check on those campuses. 13) Show sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. 14) Accurately describe incidents, situations, individuals, and vehicles in both oral and written communications. 15) Testify in court, as needed. PHYSICAL EFFORT OF THE POSITION: Moderate physical labor including lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to 35 pounds, bending, kneeling and stooping, constant standing, walking long distances and riding a bicycle for extended periods of time; manual dexterity required to operate Campus Police radio equipment safely, as needed; ability to safely operate District vehicles, including electric carts, on campus locations. Ability to stay alert and observant. Subject to occasional travel to various District locations to work. EMOTIONAL EFFORT OF THE POSITION: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications in person, by phone and in writing with with students, staff, faculty and members of the general public from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to effectively work alone or as a crew member on a variety of assigned tasks; subject to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by radio, intermittent exposure to impatient, angry and/or verbally aggressive individuals. Exposure to stressful and/or potentially dangerous situations; ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities. WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE POSITION: Primarily busy, outdoor environment; occasional indoor work; subject to frequent contacts and interruptions by individuals in person or by phone/radio; may be required to work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or evening hours including weekends and holidays on an as-needed basis.
