Position Goal:
The RN Clinical Educator is responsible for facilitating appropriate education for Critical Care service areas (all staff in ICU, TCU, ER, CPU, Endoscopy, Dialysis, RNs in Radiology). The scope of work encompasses assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive plan for meeting the educational needs. The expectation is for the Clinical educator to provide education to service line staff at least 80% of time.

Position Responsibilities:
1. Identifies and assesses learning needs of department employees by observing care being delivered, reviewing quality assurance data, and seeking input from the department staff and manager.
2. Develops list of education needs and identifies best method for meeting needs of employees, including, but not limited to, in-service education, certification programs, outside workshops/seminars, professional readings for assigned service areas.
3. Develops schedule of planned educational offerings and coordinates scheduling dates with other offerings within and outside the hospital.
4. Researches topics to be presented and facilitates various education activities, e.g.., certification programs (BCLS, ACLS, etc.), in-services, unit clinical rotations, skills laboratories, etc.
5. Evaluates effectiveness of educational activities conducted and revises materials as necessary.
6. Ensures department employees are kept informed of changes to unit policies, procedures, patient care standards, and are trained in use of new equipment, supplies and/or instruments.
7. Maintains accurate records of educational activities offered and communicates and reports as appropriate.
8. Maintains own clinical and educational competence by working in clinical units, as indicated.
9. Provides support to and works with the Director of Education in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating continuing nursing education (CNE) activities.
10. Works with Staff Educators to coordinate and facilitate clinical orientation for new employees and Graduate Nurse Residency programs.
11. Identifies staff qualified to be preceptors. Educates preceptors in process and responsibilities. Assigns preceptors to new employees and follow-ups with preceptors to determine orientees' progress and development of education action plans, as needed.
12. Participates in various committees, such as preceptor committee and nursing task force meetings, as well as department meetings to obtain further information that impacts staff educational activities.
13. Provides support for facility-wide education activities, as needed. Assist with facility-wide BCLS courses on a monthly basis and ACLS and PALS at least quarterly.
14. In conjunction with department management, participates in the development of unit-specific policies, procedures, and patient care standards. Assist in implementing such changes with in the service areas.
15. Supports and is involved in the hospital Process Improvement efforts.
16. Assists with researching and dealing with sentinel events, to include planning for, correcting, and prevention of such events.
17. Works with management staff to provide counseling and debriefing sessions for employees, as needed.
18. Monitors unit and staff and ensures compliance with regulations of outside agencies, eg., OSHA, The Joint Commission, Board of Nursing, Texas Department of Health, etc. and takes corrective actions as necessary.
19. Attends mandatory department meetings, and other work related educational programs.
20. Serves as HealthStream Administrator to assist with entering educational activity completion, tracking of educational activities and running reports. Submits employee transcripts to service area Nurse Directors for employees dues for performance appraisals.
21. Provides leadership and promotes teamwork within departments. Ensures effective communication among caregivers, educators, and management staff.
22. Supports the mission and goals of the hospital.
Position Requirements:

Experience :
1. 3 years of concurrent experience in appropriate service line area.
2. Recent experience in developing teaching and coordinating educational programs for
adult learner preferred.

Education:
Graduate of accredited school of nursing, RN, BSN required, Masters Degree preferred.

Special Qualifications:
1. Service Line area certification preferred (eg. CCRN, CEN, etc.)
2. BLS Instructor certification required. (can train)
3. ACLS Instructor certification required. (can train)
4. PALS Instructor certification required (can train)
5. Excellent speaking and presentation skills.
6. Knowledge of principle of adult learning.
