Mill Superintendent (Manager)
The Mill Superintendent ensures that objectives are established and met for safety and hygiene, environmental performance, production, costs, mine development, quality control, and personnel development. The incumbent defines the action to be taken and systems to be used in meeting these objectives and monitors the department’s Key Performance Measures to ensure objectives are being achieved. This position reports to the General Manager. Direct reports are the Chief Metallurgist, Chief Assayer, Senior Process Control Engineer and Mill General Foremen. The mill treats approximately 2,500 tons of ore per day to produce approximately 1,000 ounces of gold per day. The milling operation includes grinding, gravity concentration, sulfide flotation, paste thickening, CIP/Leach, cyanide detoxification , tailings filtration, a paste mix plant for underground backfill, water treatment, and refining. The mine utilizes a state of the art DCS based Fisher Delta V control system to control all aspects of the mill. PLC’s are extensively used to regulate and control individual pieces of equipment throughout the facility. Tailings are placed in a dry stack impoundment to minimize environmental impact. Accountabilities: Ensure that adequate safety procedures and health programs are developed and adhered to in accordance with Company policy and appropriate regulations. Ensure that the mill operation complies with all environmental regulations. Responsible for compliance with water discharge permits. Ensure that production is maximized and metallurgical performance optimized to meet operating objectives, quality standards, and to pursue opportunities for future improvements. Optimize existing milling processes by directing and evaluating process development projects, as well as daily monitoring, sampling, and testing programs. Participate in formulation of the annual operating budget and control costs to remain within the guidelines of the budget. Monitors mill costs and explains variances. Participate in short and long-term planning to determine capital expenditures for sustaining and future productivity improvements in the mill. Participates in short-term and long-term planning to determine production forecasts, recovery of gold and the impact development work will have on overall objectives. Develop staff and evaluate their performance to make recommends regarding selection, promotion, transfer or termination. Develop and maintain close communications and coordination with maintenance, mine, geology, and environmental groups, as well as other departments, to provide and receive information and keep abreast of new developments and changing needs. Oversees the operation of the assay, metallurgical and environmental Departments. Plays an active role in the Site Senior Management Team to identify, develop and implement medium to long term strategies in improving all aspects of the Site; this includes safety, environment, people, production and cost. Coordinates the development of short to long term objectives for the Department and oversees their implementation Requires: · A B.S. or M.S. Degree in Mineral Processing or equivalent. · 5 to 8 years of operating experience as a mill superintendent. · Excellent leadership, communication and presentation skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a team. · Experience leading and managing a group of professionals to achieve short term and long term objectives. · The ability to work effectively under pressure. · Experience in developing and maintaining operator training programs. · Experience in setting and maintaining both capital and operating budgets for milling operations. · Experience with mine to mill operating strategies. · Familiarity with the Unit Operations and their operational capability. · Knowledge of maintenance and reliability concepts and how they relate to the operation of the Mill equipment. Experience in providing guidance on maintenance priorities especially during planned outages. · Knowledge of water treatment plants and be familiar with environmental monitoring requirements. · Familiarity with both PLC based and DCS based process control is an asset. This is a camp job with transportation provided to/from the site and work rotation of 4 days on/3 days off, but the potential for an alternative work schedules exists initially. Relocation assistance is provided. Excellent compensation package. All rooms have phone, internet, & cable TV connections. The camp has a game room, an exercise room, a weight room & a sauna. Must pass a post-offer background check, physical, and drug test.
