Provides professional nursing care (as defined by the Nurse Practice Act for the State of Texas) within an assigned unit; coordinates care planning with other disciplines.

Utilizes the nursing process to provide individualized, goal directed nursing care.

Institutes appropriate nursing interventions which might be required to stabilize a patient's condition and/or prevent complications.

Knows rationale for the effects and proper administration of the medications and/or treatments s/he administers.

Consults with the appropriate licensed practitioner to clarify any order or treatment regimen that the nurse has reason to believe is inaccurate and/or contraindicated.

Reports and documents the patient's symptoms, responses, progress, medications, and/or treatments.

Promotes and participates in patient education and counseling based on health needs.

Collaborates with members of health disciplines in the interest of the patient's health care.

Consults and utilizes community agencies and resources for continuity of patient care.

Documents completely and in an organized and timely manner.

Verifies, dates, times, and signs off medical orders.

Charts all medications given on MAR, documenting response, if appropriate.

Updates and maintains current Kardex.

Performs all required skills competently. Functions independently with complex treatments, procedures, and equipment required by unit's patient population.

Complies with policies regarding narcotics/controlled substances.

Utilizes supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.

Troubleshoots equipment independently.

Seeks guidance when using unfamiliar equipment.

Gives a comprehensive shift report. Gives report on patients when leaving an assignment.

Presents a positive unit and nursing image when communicating with other departments, nursing units, physicians, patients/families.

Acts as a patient advocate in accordance with the ANA Code of Nursing.

Participates in the problem solving process.
