Minimum Experience/Education: Education and Experience: The expected level of formal training for the County Extension Director is a Master's degree from an accredited institution in a field related to supervision and administration.

In addition to the formal education, the County Extension Director must have a minimum of three years of service with Cooperative Extension and must hold or be eligible to hold an appointment at the level of Associate Extension Agent or higher. The individual must demonstrate the ability to plan, organize, and work well with people.

Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Director's job requires that the individual possesses educational leadership and statesmanship qualities, habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual, a high degree of objectivity, and effective oral and written communication skills.

Departmental Required Skills: Richmond County is uniquely located in the heartland of the Carolinas with easy access to Raleigh, Charlotte, Wilmington, and Greensboro. Richmond County is the home of an estimated 46,564 citizens. Besides textiles, poultry processing makes up a substantial part of the local industry. There are an estimated 250 farms in Richmond County that generated a total farm income of over $118 million in 2006. Field crops, vegetables and berries accounted for over $10 million. Richmond County's poultry industry, including processing, generated an estimated $96 million in 2006. There is a growing interest in building additional poultry houses, alternative and organic agriculture, and meat goat production.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Preferred applicants would have abilities or experience in the following areas: demonstrated leadership, supervisory experience, human relations skills, team-building, public policy issues, education, and the ability to work with people, staff, customers, elected officials and volunteers.

Essential Job Duties: The position requires a dynamic individual to provide visionary leadership for a comprehensive Extension program to meet the needs of diverse segments of the population. The County Extension Director is the administrative, supervisory, and program leader for the county Extension staff and must maintain an effective working relationships with county government, state government, Extension specialists, Advisory Leadership System and other support groups.

The county director will be responsible for providing administrative, supervisory and program leadership in planning, delivery and accountability of the total Extension program. The county director will also be responsible for staff development.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the position may be assigned programming responsibility for subject matter areas which are related to the skills and abilities of the selected candidate.

The position must network and collaborate with agencies and organizations, county departments, schools, town officials, area agencies, University and Extension personnel in the county in marketing Extension to the citizens of Richmond County. The position will be responsible for coordinating staff development, training and maintaining the Affirmative Action Plan of North Carolina Cooperative Extension. The individual must demonstrate the ability to plan, organize, and work well with people.

The County Extension Director must maintain a strong, collaborative relationship in assisting the staff in delivering educational programs with county government input and support. The director will be responsible for developing and maintaining an advisory leadership system representative of all program areas; networking and collaborating with county government, other county agencies and organizations and marketing Extension to the citizens of Richmond County. The successful applicant should have leadership skills, supervisory experience, public relations skills and the ability to work with people, elected officials and volunteers.

Travel within district is required

Other Work/Responsibilities: The County Extension Director is a member of the faculty of North Carolina State University. The major responsibility of the job is to provide leadership for and coordinate the efforts of the county Extension staff in developing an effective total county Extension education program. Other responsibilities include organizing and allocating resources, marketing the Extension program, preparing budgets, maintaining administrative relationships, interpreting and communicating policy, teaching, evaluating, and reporting in the assigned county.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications: Valid Driver's License and reliable, personal transportation required.
Valid NCDL required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
