TITLE: RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - PROTEIN EXPRESSION & PURIFICATION - Seattle, WA

Job Description
PURPOSE:

We are seeking a motivated research associate with a BS or MS degree in biochemistry or related field to join the protein expression and purification effort for generating research proteins. The individual should possess strong core competency in protein biochemistry and will have responsibility for research experiments and data integrity. Incumbents must be able to design and perform an experiment in close collaboration with research scientist.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the staff scientist in the department also accountable to the Department Head.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

· Responsible for the purification and characterization of research proteins for studying cytokine activity and immune cell functions.
· Manage protein inventory. Order and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment.
· Perform a wide variety of technical procedures and operation of varied lab instrumentation/computer platforms. Implement methods using journal articles and other scientists as resources, with guidance from supervisor.
· Use knowledge and experiences to interpret and properly document experimental data.
· Ability to prepare clear and accurate protocols, data summaries and quantitative analyses for distribution and/or presentation to project teams, and for inclusion in project reports. Ensure data integrity of NNIRC. Conduct data collection, interpretation and ensure proper documentation of experimental data.
· Achieve business goals, share learning, knowledge and skills and promote cross-functional teamwork.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS: EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

· BS with 2-5 years or MS with two years of relevant experience from basic research or the pharmaceutical industry required.
· Strong protein purification and analytical skills, and a good understanding of protein purification method development, are essential.
· Demonstrated proficiency in a variety of chromatographic methods for protein purification/characterization (such as reverse phase, ion exchange, size exclusion, hydrophobic interaction, affinity chromatography, SDS-PAGE, Western blot, etc.), and excellent instrumental skills, including AKTA, HPLC systems, ultrafiltration and diafiltration, are required.
· Protein characterization skills using biochemical and biophysical techniques is required. Demonstrable experience using modern HPLC systems, SEC-MALS and binding interaction technologies is desirable.
· Expertise in cloning and expression is a plus.
· Experience with multiple classes of therapeutic proteins, including antibodies, fusion-proteins, growth factors, cytokines, and soluble receptors is desirable.
· Must be self- motivated, detail-oriented, and proactive.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills; flexibility and the ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment required.
