POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Assistant assumes the responsibility for performing phlebotomy skills appropriately and efficiently under the philosophy, policies and procedures established by the hospital and the laboratory department. To assure the highest degree of quality patient care is maintained at all times.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Knowledge of technical aspects of the phlebotomy and the activities related to optimal collection and maintenance of specimens for laboratory testing.
2. To demonstrate skill and accuracy in obtaining specimens for all age groups serviced.
3. Performs clerical duties for the Laboratory.
4. Practices, develops and endorses customer service skills in relationships with internal and external customers.
5. Maintains inter and intra departmental communications via telephone, intercom, pager, fax and reception desk.
6. Observes Safety, Infection Control and Risk Management policies and procedures.
7. Participates and cooperates in the department performance Improvement Process.
8. Participates in continuing education and professional activities.
9. Performs any duties for efficient and quality operation of the department.
10. Performs point-of-care testing.
11. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED: (list required and preferred separately)
REQUIRED: High School graduate or equivalent.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: (list required and preferred separately)
REQUIRED: Phlebotomy Training Certificate

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED: (list required and preferred separately)
PREFERRED: General one (1) year Phlebotomy experience or equivalent clinical lab training.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
Good people skills, computer skills helpful, full technical knowledge of specific medical laboratory area is highly desirable.
