Medical Director for Quality: A physician with experience in provider quality measurement to play a major role in planning, researching, implementing, and maintaining quality measures.
- This position will provide an opportunity to develop and maintain products used in provider quality measurement and disease/care management programs.
- It represents a unique opportunity to participate and provide leadership in a fast moving, highly matrixed environment blending the worlds of medicine, technology, and business on a national stage.
- The Medical Director for Quality will be an important part of a core team responsible for all methodologies related to quality measurement.
- The team includes other medical informaticists, analysts, and developers.
- The medical director will serve as a consultant and content expert within UnitedHealthcare on issues related to quality measurement.
- In addition, the medical director will serve as a subject matter expert representing Ingenix quality measurement activities to various external bodies including customers, national organizations, key medical groups or hospitals.
Description of role: Medical Director, Quality
- Report to the Medical Director of EBM Connect
- Provide clinical expertise and leadership in the ongoing identification, development and maintenance of quality measures
- Identify gaps in the current quality measures and methodologies and develop plans to address them (e.g., applicable specialties, attribution methodology, data integrity, and overall strengths and limitations)
- Work with customers and project teams that use Symmetry EBM Connect
- Identify new clinical data sources for quality measurement
- Participate in quality measurement research and testing initiatives
- Work with external organizations, including national and physician specialty organizations, to advance quality measurement collaboration
- Review new proposed quality measure from sources such as NQF, CMS, and the AMA PCPI
- Develop methodology related to risk and other adjustments for quality measures
- Assist with quality measurement transparency efforts
- Identify and submit quality measures for national endorsement
- Present at conferences, sales and internal training meetings
- Minneapolis area preferred; limited remote work (up to 50 percent) a possibility
- Travel up to 10%

- The successful candidate will have a solid background in clinical medicine as well as formal training and/or practical experience in the review and development of quality measures for quality improvement programs and related initiatives.
- Health plan experience and intimate knowledge of information systems, claims data, risk adjustment and working with large databases, and tools are required.
- Experience with health services research techniques, query languages, statistical analysis, and reporting would be helpful and preferred.
- Medical degree (MD or DO) and current license REQUIRED
- Five years clinical experience (current board certification preferred) REQUIRED
- Five years experience in a managed care organization, health plan, or large provider system
- Experience in medical informatics, including quality performance measurement, and related methodologies
Desirable additional qualifications:
- Advanced degree (masters or doctorate) relevant to provider performance assessment (e.g., medical informatics, health economics, public health, business administration, law)
- Formal training or relevant experience in quality measurement and related initiatives
- Leadership skills and experience
- Direct supervisory experience
