Position Description
Current Boeing employees working in Puget Sound must submit an Employee Requested Transfer (ERT) with a Quality through Training Program (QTTP) advisor to be considered in the eligible candidate pool. Resumes of current Boeing employees submitted via BESS will not be considered. Mechanics needed in numerous assembly centers/shops to fabricate and assemble aircraft interior panels, stowage bins, sidewalls, closets, and other assemblies manufactured from honeycomb core, fiberglass, aluminum, and other materials. These employees will make vinyl laminate lay-ups after assembly operations have been developed by higher graded employees. Employees will attach and adjust thermocouple leads and vacuum controls and operate platens to perform bonding of decorative vinyl laminates and panels. Employment in this position also requires lifting and carrying less than 10 pounds, rotation of head/neck, twisting at the waist, walking, standing, finger manipulation flexion/extension, contact with adhesives, solvents and plastics, exposure to noise, and the use of personal safety gear for hand/arm and ears. Additional Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities: Obtain and verify kitted (pre-picked) detail parts, standards, and assemblies were issued correctly. Ensure that parts issued are effective for the airplane and are free of visible defects. Set up assembly tools per tooling instructions or drawings. Select drill bits, reamers and/or countersinking tools for pilot and full size holes. Drill pilot holes using drill motor and proper size drill bit(s). Drill, ream, countersink full size holes in parts/assemblies, in proper sequence and to correct size using drill motor. Set countersinking tools to proper depth as required. Apply sealant, alodine, primer, adhesives and special finishes. Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in approved manner. Determine and obtain correct type and size fasteners. Installs fasteners in correct sequence per drawing, using correct tools (e.g., rivet gun and bucking bar, drill motor, power screwdriver, C-squeeze, ratchet wrench, nut runner). Check work after completion of each operation in job and/or completed job to ensure it is complete per drawing. Obtain appropriate work order engineering drawing(s) and plan for assigned job. Locate parts on assembly tools, making parts and/or assemblies per drawing. Align parts to tool stops, matching pilot holes or by hand layout and secure in place using tooling/hand clamps. Check for good edge margins and alignment. Install inserts in panels per drawing requirements in pre-drilled holes, apply epoxy, clean up excess and allow to cure. Remove tabs from inserts and perform any needed repair work. Operate potting machine dispenser to mix and obtain potting compounds. Sand panel and apply filler compound to fill low areas, allow to cure, and sand surface level. Clean and prepare for next operation. Cut decorative laminations to size using blanking tool or knife. Layout parts per drawing, apply glue and decorative lamination, put in laminator to hot bond, or put in vacuum bag for cold bond, allow to cure, and remove and route to next station. Attach thermocouple leads and operate platens to bond vinyl laminates. Perform edge wrap of panel using heat gun to form decorative lamination over unfinished edge or bond on edge trim piece. Apply studs and/or inserts to panels using induction heater. Install brackets, trim pieces, and miscellaneous hardware to panels using adhesive and/or standards. Competencies Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings. Must be capable of visualizing a three-dimensional shape from a two-dimensional view and understanding symbols, flag notes, and general notes. Must be able to operate computing equipment and use standard and non-standard computing applications. Work with others as part of a team. Dependable, flexible and adaptable to change. Ability to use math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals and fractions) and use various types of hand and/or hand held power tools. Use various jigs and fixtures to orient parts into pre-defined positions. Mechanical ability, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required to build various assemblies. Education and/or Experience High School Graduate or GED preferred.
