Minimum Experience/Education: Education and Experience: The expected level of formal training for the County Extension Director is a Master's degree from an accredited institution in a field related to supervision and administration.
In addition to the formal education, the County Extension Director must have a minimum of three years of service with Cooperative Extension and must hold or be eligible to hold an appointment at the level of Associate Extension Agent or higher. The individual must demonstrate the ability to plan, organize, and work well with people. Departmental Required Skills: This position is based in New Hanover County, located in southeastern North Carolina between the Cape Fear River and Atlantic Ocean. It is the second smallest county in the state but home to over 180,000 persons. The area is growing rapidly with a 28.5% growth rate over the past ten years. The city of Wilmington is the county seat and is rich in historical significance and home to many recreational and cultural sites and events. The main industries are the state ports and tourism. Wilmington is home to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and is considered the cultural, educational, healthcare, and economic center of Southeastern North Carolina. Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Skills, abilities, and experience preferred include demonstrated leadership; supervisory experience; human relations skills and team building; negotiation; public relations skills; ability to work with and educate a diverse audience including staff, customers, and volunteers. Applicants are also expected to have outstanding communication and computer skills and be able to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Essential Job Duties: The County Extension Director will be responsible for providing administrative, supervisory and program leadership in planning, delivery, evaluation and accountability of the following program areas: agriculture and natural resources, family and consumer sciences, 4-H and youth development, and community and rural development. The County Director will also be responsible for staff development and will be assigned specific subject matter as appropriate. In addition, the County Director will be responsible for developing and maintaining an active advisory council, marketing programs and activities, and networking and collaborating with groups, local leaders and county government and other agencies and organizations. The County Director maintains an effective working relationship with county government, NC State University, and Extension personnel. Travel within district is required. Other Work/Responsibilities: The County Extension Director is a member of the faculty of North Carolina State University. The major responsibility of the job is to provide leadership for and coordinate the efforts of the county Extension staff in developing an effective total county Extension education program. Other responsibilities include organizing and allocating resources, marketing the Extension program, preparing budgets, maintaining administrative relationships, interpreting and communicating policy, teaching, evaluating, and reporting in the assigned county. Necessary Licenses or Certifications: Valid Driver's License and reliable, personal transportation required. Valid NCDL required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
