Medical Laboratory Assistant
Schedule: Rotating full-time floating position to include holidays, weekends, and evenings on various shifts. Locations include Reston, Loudoun, and Ashburn.
Purpose of Job
Provides laboratory services by performing a variety of procedures including proper specimen collection, specimen processing, and Phlebotomy.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Follows established procedures for collection, processing and testing of patient samples.
2. Instruct members on other specimen collections.
3. Reviews lab request form or computer generated requisition for tests that have been requested and enter test requests and generate specimen labels.
4. Communicates specimen collection instructions to patients in a clear and concise manner. Schedules laboratory appointments for specified tests.
5. Packages specimens for transport and tracks specimens to the final destination in accordance with KPMAS laboratory policies and procedures and/or DOT regulations. Arranges for special transport of specimens when necessary.
6. Performs waived or limited moderately complex laboratory testing in accordance with standards set forth in the approved Laboratory Procedures Manual. Reports and maintains records of patient results according to protocol. (Waived and moderately complex are recognized laboratory test complexity classifications as defined in CLIA 88 federal regulations).
7. Adheres to quality assurance plans and quality control procedures. Takes corrective action when necessary and documents these actions for review. Performs

9. Communicates with medical, clinical and technical staff within the medical facility and other laboratories concerning specimen inquiries, problems, and investigations in a timely manner according to established laboratory procedures.
10. Performs duties in compliance with laboratory safety and infection control practices.
11. Recognizes unexpected or unreasonable delays, brings any upset patient or unusual situation to the attention of the supervisor or designee.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience
• One year of experience working in a clinical environment which includes laboratory testing, phlebotomy, and specimen processing.
• Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.
Education and Training
• High school graduate or equivalent required.
( Successful completion of MLA course required with a passing grade at an accredited college or university.
License, Certifications, Other Credentials
• Phlebotomy certification by nationally recognized agency preferred.
( Pass MLA competency exam (internal to Kaiser Permanente) with 80% as minimum passing score for every discipline during probationary period or prior to promotion which ever is applicable.
