Job Description:
The Psychologist II is hired by and directly accountable to the Assistant Superintendent for Programs. He/she performs advanced and/or managerial (senior-level) psychological work. The Psychologist II works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The Psychologist II provides professional supervision and consultation for all staff psychologists. The Psychologist II may also supervise psychology interns or practicum students. He/she actively participates in and approves decisions to hire staff psychologists. The Psychologist II is responsible for ongoing performance evaluation of staff psychologists and participates in the formal evaluation process. The Psychologist II reviews and coordinates the review and approval process for behavior support plans and reviews the use of psychotropic medication in treating behavior problems. The Psychologist II systematically evaluates the consistent implementation of behavior support plans through personal observation, staff interviews, and review of documentation. He/she works with Unit Directors and staff psychologists to facilitate effective program implementation. The Psychologist II provides for professional development of staff psychologists including applied behavior analysis, learning principles, positive behavior support, and contemporary psychological issues to positively impact service delivery. The Psychologist II is responsible for maintaining knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and departmental and agency policy and for developing systems and procedures to meet the standards and requirements therein. Some travel is required and work schedule varies upon request or as needed.

Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. Assists, as needed, in provision of professional supervision and consultation to Associate Psychologists, interdisciplinary teams, and other staff and works with Associate Psychologists to facilitate effective program implementation. Fills in with Associate Psychologist vacancies as needed. Assists in systematically evaluating the consistent implementation of behavior support plans through personal observation, staff interviews, and review of documentation. May include analysis of trends and patterns of problem behaviors, use of restrictive and emergency procedures, and treatment results. Assists in providing professional development and training of Associate Psychologists including applied behavior analysis, learning principles, behavior modification techniques, positive behavior support, and contemporary psychological issues to positively impact service delivery. Provides psychological testing, programming, diagnosing, counseling, reporting, and performs research. Serves on and chairs, in the absence of the Chief Psychologist, the Behavior Support Committee. Acts as the Chief Psychologist in the temporary absence of the Chief Psychologist, provides after hours on-call support as requested, and informs the Chief Psychologist in a timely manner and with recommendations for correction regarding any significant issues related to behavioral services. Maintains current knowledge in relevant professional areas (e.g., applied behavior analysis, symptoms of psychiatric disorders, specialty populations, psychotropic medications) and applicable standards and regulations.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge and experience in administering all aspects of the delivery of psychological service to persons with intellectual disabilities. Knowledge regarding etiology and characteristics of mental retardation. Knowledge regarding applicable laws, regulations, and departmental and agency policy. Knowledge and skills in the administration of standardized evaluations including assessments of intelligence and adaptive behavior. Knowledge and skills in applied behavior analysis and behavior support plan development, implementation, and evaluation. Knowledge regarding medications used to assist with behavior management and systems to track treatment effectiveness. Ability to train staff in programming and related psychological/behavioral areas. Ability to professionally supervise psychological/behavioral and programming staff. Ability to work with minimal supervision and make varied decisions within broad guidelines/parameters. Advanced writing skills in developing technical reports, grants, research proposals, and other relevant documents. Leadership skills in motivating staff and effectively implementing changes. Knowledge and skills in using personal computers and relevant software. Completion of required supervisory training including Positive Performance Program, Employee Selection Process, and Human Resources within the first 90 days of employment.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Must be licensed as a Psychologist by the State of Texas or a reciprocity state.

Initial Selection Criteria:
Knowledge and experience in administering psychological service to persons with intellectual disabilities. Knowledge and skills in the administration of standardized evaluations including assessments of intelligence and adaptive behavior. Knowledge and skills in applied behavior analysis and behavior support plan development, implementation, and evaluation.
