POLICE SUPPORT SERVICES OFFICER - PART TIME (Non-sworn)

DEFINITION OF POSITION:

Under the general supervision of the Police Commander, acts as Court Officer responsible for maintenance and preservation of all police evidence and property. Performs other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Assists Police Support Services Officer as liaison between police department personnel and the Court; presents all misdemeanor cases, and when required, felony cases to the District Attorney’s office. Assists with maintenance of case status log and follow-up log on misdemeanor and felony cases; files complaints with appropriate divisions of the Court.

· Assists with maintaining and preserving all evidence including existing, released, destroyed and or auctioned evidence; maintains chain of evidence. Logs, maintains and secures all evidence and property seized and transports evidence to Court or the crime lab for analysis. Secures and maintains evidence and associated monitoring and record keeping; Fingerprints citizens applying for various licenses

· Releases property as required; prepares excess property for city auction; and prepares property for destruction as necessary.

· Assists with coordination of activities with other officers or other City departments as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies; communicates with attorneys, judges, probation personnel, investigators, court personnel, crime victims and their families; etc., regarding cases, policies and procedures, as needed.

· Composes a variety of correspondence, reports and other materials requiring independent judgment as to content, accuracy and completeness.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or GED with additional vocational training police sciences, law enforcement, criminal justice or related field; supplemented by two years of general office, communications, or records management experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Valid California drivers license and acceptable driving record. Must be 18 years or older at the time of employment and have no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories.

· Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; knowledge of procedures and policies for receiving, securing, maintaining and transporting evidence. Knowledge of FFC regulations, Penal Code, Health & Safety Code, Port Hueneme Municipal Code, etc.
