Proivde counselor services to adults in residential substance abuse treatment.



Phoenix House currently seeks Counselor Interns to work directly with the clients to deliver Therapeutic Community programming, model positive behavior, maintain clinical records and work with the rest of the treatment team to maintain a safe, respectful, trauma-informed therapeutic community within the prison.

Primary duties include:

  • Performs primary counselor intern duties to inmates to include but are not limited to psychosocial assessments; skill building exercises, development of treatment plans; monitors progress towards treatment plan goals; crisis intervention; group, individual, family and didactic sessions; discharge summary and planning; coordination of treatment services with probation, school and other referral sources. Multi-lingual counselor interns may be asked to conduct services in multiple languages to meet the needs of the clients and families.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate completion of charts, reports, and other documentation related to the treatment and progress of inmates in the program. These reports include but are not limited to individual and weekly progress notes, documentation of attendance and participation in-group, didactics and family sessions.
  • Provides inmate supervision. Provides contraband searches in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Promotes and utilizes the Therapeutic Community method and philosophy for substance abuse treatment.
  • Attends and participates in shift change meetings, clinical reviews, staff meetings and other treatment team meetings in accordance with program needs.
  • Attends all required training sessions in accordance with Phoenix House and state licensing requirements.

Minimum qualifications include:

· High school diploma or equivalent. Related degree preferred

· Counselor Intern/temporary counselor license status with the state of Texas or eligibility to acquire such status, and two years commitment to achieve licensure in chemical dependency treatment

· Counseling experience which includes providing Offender treatment services preferred

· Ability to demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills with offenders, team members and external constituents.

· Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment

· Ability to establish and consistently enforce appropriate boundaries with clients

· Ability to model positive behavior.

· Strong crisis management, conflict resolution and anger management skills

· Proficiency in MS Office products and web based programs

· Good organization and time management skills

· Valid Texas driver’s license

· Therapeutic Community treatment modality or chemical dependency services experience is preferred

· Ability to effectively communicate in both Spanish and English is preferred
