Counselor Assistant II (#3CEX05)


The Position

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a Counselor Assistant II - (Extended Opportunity Programs and Services, EOPS) for Las Positas College in Livermore. This is paraprofessional work involved in providing counseling related information and support services to students and other persons, and facilitating the use of Extended Opportunity Programs and Services, under the general supervision of a manager with immediate supervision occasionally provided by a faculty member. The position differs from clerical due to the requirement for a thorough knowledge of the counseling function and the ability to make judgments as to which matters involving student concerns should be referred to a professional staff member. This position reports directly to the Vice President, Student Services.


Assignment/Salary

The position is Full-time, Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., may include some evenings, 12 months/yr. Employment will begin on or about December 9, 2009. The salary is $3,758.92/mo. (Range 34, Funding: 100% Categorical). Continuation of this position is contingent upon available funding on a year-to-year date.


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Equivalent to the completion of second year of community college AND one year of full-time, successful work experience in a closely-related library, counseling, or social service activity OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which indicates possession of knowledge and skills required.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Knowledge of: Methods of assisting and informing students in the assigned area; modern office procedures, including filing, organizing and setting priorities; correct English usage; and subject matter in the area to which assigned.

Skills in: The ability to read, learn and apply District policies, procedures, rules and regulations pertaining to students; expressing oneself clearly in oral and written communication, including explaining complex procedures and guidelines; performing clerical tasks such as compiling data, handling callers and maintaining records with accuracy and speed, despite interruptions; typing at 40 NWPM when assigned to a clerical, office-type activity; analyzing situations accurately and adopting an effective course of action; working independently, organizing and setting priorities; effective interpersonal relationships and working cooperatively with others.


Desirable Qualifications

Computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office Software; previous experience working with programs serving low-income, ethnic minority, and/or economically "disadvantaged" clientele; bilingual skills desired; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to multi-task and work well within a team environment; and, familiarity with a financial database
and budget/accounting practices.


Duties and Responsibilities

The Counselor Assistant I or II may coordinate the delivery of any of the following services offered for EOPS Students to increase the extent to which they complete their educational and career objectives:

Provision of on-campus outreach and intake efforts to inform and advise additional students of potential eligibility and application processes for Extended Opportunity Programs and Services and related programs;
Organization of specialized and comprehensive orientation sessions for new and continuing students to provide information for students to become acquainted with and updated on college and program policies, services, academic expectations, and procedures;
Coordination of the delivery of required “above and beyond” counseling services to include comprehensive needs assessments, responsibility contracts, academic follow-up, referral, and evaluation;
Coordination of the EOPS Peer Advising Program as an adjunct to the counseling component to provide more extensive and ongoing follow-up and “retention monitoring” to 1) detect early signs of academic difficulty; and 2) communicate more frequently with students by providing more frequent intervention, performance feedback, and encouragement;
Implementation of individual and small group advising addressing special students needs, i.e., ESL conversation, re-entry adults, transfer, and career interests;
Coordination of the Student Evaluation Component to measure and evaluate individual student progress and outcomes including achievement of certificates, degrees, transfer, and employment objectives;
Implementation of the active utilization of the computerized student information reporting systems to ensure more effective delivery of EOPS programs and services;
Hiring, supervision, evaluation, and in-service training program for EOPS Peer Advisory component;
Perform other related tasks as assigned.
